NY chicken lover!!!!

The muck boots have great reviews and are suppose to be good from sub zero to 85 degrees. I did some research before getting them & tried a pair on at TSC to make sure I got the right size. I dont mind paying more for a good boot thats going to last a long time. They do come in different heights. I am short so these come up to almost my knee lol
fyi--if you get a hole or a small tear in your mucks, lexol (lexel) in the caulk section of any hardware store is a great item to repair the boot injuries with. it stays flexible in the cold once it is cured.

Lynzi,

I am far behind on catching up on posts here after another flurry of busy days, but it would seem you have gotten at least 1 egg.......finally!

Hooray!!

And for once, I can actually answer your question. YES - I have had eggs freeze in the coop, at least partially so, and I use them....no problem!

That seems like a good way to keep their feet warmer during really cold snaps...

Hi armorfire,

These are great tips, thanks! What is a "thermo cube", though? I've never heard of this before. Thx.

My girls do NOT appreciate Old Man Winter making an early arrival. "Snow Birds", they are NOT!

I've read to use a 2X4 with the 4 side up. That way when they roost they cover their entire foot with feathers.

I remember when I was in the fourth grade the teacher was talking about evolution and said, "If I put you outside with no clothes you'll grow hair all over".
Well that was a big fat lie, cuz if it were true I'd have Hobbit feet. My feet would be covered with hair, they freeze every year and right now they hurt they're so cold.

You aren't the only one far behind. I am almost caught up though.

Thanks Pharm! War on mites is better than what is was a couple of weeks ago. The last time I checked was the day before my splash had died and they were all mite free, from what I could see anyway. Today I went out there and saw one or two on my lavender hen, and quite a few on my lavender roo. I'm NOT bringing them in for more baths, I'm just going to keep dusting them with the DE since I am all out of Sevin. But other than that, I will not do anything further. I can't keep stressing out about these stupid bugs. A few is't going to kill them, so I will do my best to keep it under control by dusting them from time to time since they don't have a desire to do it themselves apparently.

Firstly, congrat's on the Orp egg, as well as the ducky. Maybe things will start to really pick up for you. Fingers crossed.

Secondly, with regard to the mites, sounds like a good plan to regularly hit them up with the DE. I thought of your situation when I cleaned the coop out last week and put a generous about of DE down on the floor before I added fresh shavings. I also like to add DE to their dust bathing spots, along with some sand. Of course, now everything is frozen solid, so that's another reason I put a generous amount on the coop floor.

On the subject of pests, my older dog, Micah, had a tick on his face today...so disgusting, all bloated up. It was buried in pretty good, but I got it out and sent it on a "free cruise" to the ever popular destination of the septic tank. Just talking mites and ticks has me creepy-crawlie itching again!!

The egg curse is broken ! Lynzzi got hers and today I got two little brown ones - side by side. My sister BCM hens must have decided to do everything together - even their first eggs!

Both of their combs are brilliant red. Go Raven Girls GO !

Congrat's, Metella. How cute that they both laid their 1st eggs on the same day! I love my "raven girl", too -- she's the greatest.

Yup, it's snowing. I've determined that we must get thousands of new people moving to Syracuse in the summer since no one seems to know how to drive.

I joined the new egg club yesterday. One of the frizzles decided to lay yesterday and she actually did it in the nest box

Hooray on the Frizzle Egg....seems things are picking up for some folks. Ironically, today, I only got 2 eggs out of the 5 hens that are laying. (Still awaiting some action from the other 2.) I think the snowy, cold weather has some of my girls "on strike!"

I remember Stony told me to turn the roost beam around, because I suspected I had it backwards (narrow side up)...so I have it the way you describe for that very reason...to help deter frostbite.

Hairy troll feet....ewww. I think I'd rather have a warm pair of slippers!

PS: County Boy, are you caught up? I keep posting, so maybe I'm holding you up, haha!

I used a piece of fleece over the roost to hold the heat down where the birds are. They didn't mind it being there.

I am not featherz but they work very well. I actually use a glass bowl in the heated dog bowl for ease of dumping dirty water

Heres a link to one. I don't have the therma cube specifically but it's the same concept. Lowes didn't have thermo cubes but I don't remember the brand name. http://www.rivercountry101.com/servlet/the-278/THERMO-dsh-CUBE--THERMOSTATICALLY-CONTROLLED/Detail

Thanks !!! I'm sure I will end up getting them caught on something sooner or later :)

That's how I have my 2x4. Girls have toasty toes no matter how cold it gets. I know because I check them when I check them after dark. I think that sometimes their feet get to warm when I see them standing on the roost instead of poofed up and laying on them :) Mine are not snow birds either. When it started snowing they were under their A frame hut. I reminded them they had to walk thru the snow to get to the coop to roost. Apparently they survived walking thru the snow since they were all roosted when I got home :) [\quote]

I listened ...I didnt hear any diapers...Am I missing something ?
the songs I put up hardly ever say the word. Either a followup word as is usually the case or a song that fits the theme. So... diapers is the word. ******** surfers is the band ....reminds me of diapers and the song is sweet loaf. ...Get it....diaper...loaf
