NY chicken lover!!!!

Evening all. As usual, you gave me myevening chuckle to pick me up after a day in retail sucking my soul out of me.

Gramma--I may be able to enable you. I am planning to come to the picnic.

Heres hoping for a few more warm days.
Sunday is supposed to be 50 -60 degrees..
You have RIR right ? I am looking for a 2-3 of those ...are you planning on heritage chicks ?

- Some interest in Buckeyes 2-3 too

Pharm thanks for the reminder......I knew I forgot to do something earlier.........I wanted to open the screen door window more so hopefully the DL can dry out some. It's not wet per se but damp to the touch.

The humidity seems so much higher this winter. Tomorrow after some more shoveling to hopefully get down to the ground, I'm going to kick up the DL some more so it can dry out, probably adding some peat moss would help as well. Some scratch thrown on top will get the girls to help the process.

I did get most of the snow off the old run......why is it a shovel full feels like it weighs a half ton? Lol

Snow is melting ...it is denser / heavier

I'm really temped to travel the 3+ hours to the picnic - I look forward to reading this every morning - it starts my day out with some decent humans .... I'm so glad Pyxis told me about this thread!

If I go - any of you have blue egg layers ? I have EE and light green to olive - I want to add a true blue to my mix. That and marans who lay very dark eggs - I found out after I jumped that many color varieties just lay brown eggs - but I want them so dark they look like chocolate.

I'd love to get chicks of any of the two above.

So - thanks all for being such a respectable mix of people here - you are all different - but you all treat each other very well.

Morning all. So nice to not have to go out dressed like an eskimo to take care of the cheeps. Silky coops will be changed out today. The big coop isnt bad but will need some more attention as well. The humidity levels are up and the litter is damp. I did stir things up and will do more this afternoon, especially since we are supposed to get rain all weekend with higher temps. I like to keep up on these things when we get warm snaps. Better to prevent issues than deal with them. The terrorists actually piled out this morning into their run. I think they were expecting another breakfast feast. Not today. Hoping the girls lay more eggs today. I see rabbit tracks all around the silkie coops. Looks to be a good sized one too. Guess its doing cleanup detail.

Gramma--yes, I will be hatching out heritage rir chicks. Thats the direction I am going with my big coop. I will probably hatch out some mutt chicks as well. Bill, my rir roo (heritage), is in with some barred rocks and hatchery stock along with my heritage so I am going to hatch out a few of those eggs. I have a couple of hens that are laying really dark brown xlarge eggs so I am going to hatch those out too. I like the color of those eggs and they are big. Hopefully I get hens from them.

Metalla--glad you enjoy our company. We do have great peeps on here and enjoy our differences and similarities. Makes life more interesting!

Rancher--I also have the same incubator as you. Got both bators for christmas last year. Brinsea wont hold many large eggs but a fair amount of silkie eggs and I had a good hatch. I will use my genesis again to hatch out the rir eggs and mutt eggs. I have an electric turner and this year plan on loading it up. It did a good job with a small hatch last year so I expect a larger one to do just as well.

Okay--off to run errands then home for some serious cleaning inside and out. Have a great day everyone!

Ugh I know my deep litter is driving me crazy right now...or rather the humidity and this increase in temperature. Don't get me wrong I love the warmer weather but having to turn off the water heaters and stir up the shavings and add more and load them up with DE gets frustrating. Bah...and I work all day so when I get home it's too dark to go out and take care of the coops. Tomorrow will have to be a serious clean out and de-dampening day...

I've already cleaned out the chicken coop twice this winter. So much for the deep litter method!

I'd rather take out the dampness then to add more shavings to it. And if we're getting rain I better find a way to cover up that window that is open on one side. Last time it rained the wind must have blown a good amount of the rain into the coop because it was soaked the next day! I had to remove everything out of there and replace it with dry shavings.
