NY chicken lover!!!!

Had a casualty tonight when I got home from work. I found Static, one of my laying Barred Rocks, on the floor of the coop curled up as if she were sleeping. Frozen. Everyone else was on the perches, she's always on the perches. I don't understand why she wouldn't be up on the perches where it's warmer. Not the chicken I would have thought I'd find dead of cold that's for sure. (The Six juveniles, Frenchie the mostly naked Barred Rock)

So, What do I do to prepare a chicken that is already dead? I assume it would be different since I can not bleed the chicken as I normally would.
I'm sorry

I'm really paranoid about finding frozen chickens tomorrow morning...I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you. Are you positive she died from the cold?

So I had to share something unusual.....I just went out to check heated dog bowl and decided I would take bird seed out with me and spread all over the DL so the girls can eat it in the morning when they get up.
.they were fed small portions of FF twice today so they shouldn't be that hungry I wouldn't think? Perhaps the frigid temps are making them want more food? They were busy making craters in the DL today so I'm sure they were eating things they found in it all day? Think tomorrow I'll dump in some more shavings for them then throw more bird seed in. Thinking a bowl of seed wouldn't be such a bad idea either till the temps get higher.

Thoughts?
Are you feeding small portions because you afraid it will freeze ?
I am feeding them more because of the cold ...& adding sunflower seeds for them to find ...
I am mixing in some dry food to the FF to make it less liquidy.<- I think I forgot this yesterday ... I found it was frozen today so I brought it in to thaw for a bit ..
They had the spill over cleaned all up when I brought the food back out .
I put there food in where they roost tonight under their ramp so it will stay warmer ..and maybe not freeze

I would be seriously surprised if she died of the cold weather. I have never lost one to the cold...ever

Stony, she fell asleep on the floor of the coop on the north side. She was laying in a perfect sleeping position with her eyes closed.

I actually grabbed her and ran into the house thinking I could warm her up, that how asleep she looked!

Gramma chick--I love those bowls, they look a lot bigger than what I thought they would be. I might have to make a trip to wal-mart when this snow clears up and have a look for some. I usually use some tupperware when I feed FF but those look nice.
.they need to be in a base of some kind .though Chickens want to roost on them & flip them .

I said to him the other night, "I'm glad to see it takes a rat intruding on our property for you to take an interest in my chicken keeping!" He played it off like he's doing it because I would never in a million years touch a trap with a rat on it and once one was caught that would be the end for me unless someone else took care of it. ...glad he's as excited about catching these things as I am! Lol
so you are saying his New Habit is Rat Catching ? LOL

So sorry !
she does look like she is sleeping .
She probably had some internal thing going on . It looks like she might have laid down & died .
A hen roosting / squatting in that position is really warm & toasty

If you wanted you could still try to drain her blood as she froze it might still drain .not sure .

She does look just like she's sleeping. So sorry for your loss :( I lost one today too. An older wyandotte, a hatchery bird. I lost her sister earlier this year so I wasn't surprised. I just found her out in the run, not a mark on her, as if she had just passed while out with the flock.

I am so glad that this single chick is out of the house and with friends tomorrow. I tell you, even with her flamingo she won't stop crying. She also won't eat or drink unless I stick my hand in with her. Then she guzzles water and goes to town on the food. She's ridiculously cute but I won't miss the crying.
