NY chicken lover!!!!

She ? knows its not a living thing...and you are . Did you try a mirror ? Do you have it in a room where it can see & hear you ..all the time ?

Yep, she can see and hear me constantly. She was totally fine with the flamingo until today. They can be fooled by feather dusters so I had hoped the flamingo would settle her. Ah well, she'll have friends tomorrow and all will be well.

if you find the snow covered them, put them inside some kind of box or container. think shoebox with an open end for entry, rats like little hidey holes plus your trap doesnt get frozen

Just went out in the brrrrrrr.. lots of snow here, all chickens alive and well. I still lol at those peeps who think they need heat lamps when the temp is below 40F. Now me on the other hand, I had 12 layers of clothes on. :p

Thank Goddess my DH is home and he actually went out at like 2AM to snowblow so I could get to work today. Too bad I have to go in!!

Stony, she fell asleep on the floor of the coop on the north side. She was laying in a perfect sleeping position with her eyes closed.

I actually grabbed her and ran into the house thinking I could warm her up, that how asleep she looked!
I am sure she died of something else and did not freeze to death in her sleep. As someone else said, she most likely had an internal issue. Cold and hot kills the weak just like inhumans.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry.
That is crazy. How old was she?

Morning!
Well we set two traps last night and neither one was set off this morning. Not sure if we caught the only two rats we had or if it was just too cold for anymore to come out last night. it's -2 here this morning. :(

Breella ~ I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your BR hen - she was so pretty!

Stony, I know that. She was quite honestly if you would have asked me yesterday morning which of the chickens I thought most likely to pass away Static would have been the bottom of the list. She was a decent size, 4lb 12oz, She was almost 9 months old, she was laying, though every ones laying has been off because of the weather.

Also how long is too long to let her sit? I was trying to let rigor pass but she's still stiff as a board. Should I stick her in the fridge until I can process her? (I have her in a cold room right now)

Very cold. Snow blowed starting at 6:30 and I don't even have a job. DW did need to get out though the snow was not nearly as deep as they predicted. I did clean off her car and warm it up too. After I came in to get her key's it was enough to warm me up to go and do out to the coops in the dark. Sort of. I put up new spot lights and they came on and lit up the whole yard just about.

The media is making this storm out to be this terrible thing but we had less machines and yet we dealt with it fine when I was a kid. Though I am glad I have a machine to clean the snow out with. My mother used to make us shovel the driveway even though we didn't have a car. We did of course shovel drives for money too.

I will need to go out myself today for feed and gas. My car hasn't been started in two or three days.

Be careful out there folks and bundle up. Frost bite is like a sun burn you don't feel it til you come inside.
