I lost Relish my frizzle OE roo this week. Last Sunday DH let them all out to free range. Monday the fluke of all 3 girls napping at the same time occurred so I went down to the barn to collect eggs and check on the cheeps. I noticed right away he wasn't there. Found him at the other end of the barn on New Years day behind our bikes not a mark on him. This is changing my breeding plans for the spring. I have some of his daughters that I kept for breeding. I'm going to put the girls with straight combs in with our lone young Silver Ameraucana roo. The peacomb girls are going in with one of our Golden Cuckoo Maran roos. The resulting offspring I'll have to breed depending on resulting comb type and egg color. I won't get as many NN frizzle OE this way but it's better than none. I'm keeping a NN roo this next hatching season too.Hopefully I'll get one with a peacomb.

Speaking of frozen pipes, we had to leave our water running in the kitchen so the pipes wouldn't freeze up. The cold water pipe was frozen yesterday and DH had to thaw it out with our propane heater.

we're still thawing out the pipe in question - but I dragged my butt outside (hey, it's up to -8 now!!!) and all my chickens seem just fine. even the bantams and the skinny leghorns. I even had a nestbox full of frozen eggs!

Well it's a little "warmer" here today. 9 degrees instead of -2 it was yesterday morning. Someone shared this video this morning on FB, found it quite neat...

Dealing with frozen things here too. Right now it is the washer. *Note to self--if you take off protective outer wall, put it back before winter* Grrr. First time we have had the washer freeze up on us. First time the area under the washer was left unprotected from elements. Wonder if there is any relationship between the two?

On a worse note....somehow I volunteered to work this entire weekend. Private duty. Good money. But whole weekend is shot cuz it's an overnight gig. Someone pinch me, cuz I had to been asleep to take on this job.

Sorry for all those dealing with the frozen pipes.

Let the ducks out today. I kept them in yesterday, they probably weren't too happy about it but owell. They ran out this morning and ran right over to their pond. Crazy birds! LOL Still amazes me that no matter how cold it is they still want to be in the water.

Also amazed at all the deer tracks in my yard this morning. I know we have deer but I've never actually seen any venture out of the woods and onto our property. Guess you don't know until you have snow and can actually see all those that had a party in your yard while sleeping!

Night #2 for the traps and nothing. Maybe those were the only 2 digging around down there. If there are babies hopefully they are all dead from no parents around to bring them food.

It got down to -13 last night and for the first time ever, a chicken got left outside. Her name; Wynonna Wyandotte. She was running around wanting in when I got up this morning. No red feet or comb. I am amazed. She was happy to be in though.

Good to hear I'm still nursing one that desided to sleep out side 3 nights in a row back to health. Her foot is looking better but she still walks funny and don't want to close it so not sure if there was muscle damage or not.

Well I moved food and water back into the coop. The winds here was blowing 3/4 full water bowl over. Using one of those heated dog bowls so not like it should have been easy but pushed it off the pallet I had them on trying to keep them from freezing to ground. The girls are happy they ate one full bowl already I put another bowl of food in there and they attacked it again.

My leg horn desided to start laying again. I've changed a lot in the coop so I don't know what triggered her to lay again. I've put new bedding in since they was about out of it. I put less scratch in the food and more layer 1 scoop scratch to 3 of layer. I've put a dust bath tub in there so maybe less lice/mites now that can bathe. I've also put a light bulb in there along with the lights. But I also noticed the timer was set for too many hours. Some how it was set for pm not am so they was going on early and staying on late. Also less birds in there since I got rid of a lot of EE roos and probably some hens.

Well off to go pick up some silkie hatching eggs later all.

We have some chickens that keep trying to stay outside. The weird thing is they just started doing this during the worst weather. The two newest chickens and some random others. We went back to checking them every night. The two newest just started laying as well. -19 wind-chill yesterday and we had 7eggs from 7 chickens. Everyone continues to lay in the nest boxes in the coop.
