NY chicken lover!!!!

Speaking of frozen pipes, we had to leave our water running in the kitchen so the pipes wouldn't freeze up. The cold water pipe was frozen yesterday and DH had to thaw it out with our propane heater.

Our septic has been freezing. I didn't realize why the toilet wouldn't go down but I do now. I think we need to cover it a bit more. I took a hot shower and it went down okay. Also after we ran the dishwasher it was okay. We really need to add more lines to it. I don't know who installed it but it isn't covered enough.

Now be careful with those heaters. Get yourself some heat tape and wrap it. How's that baby doing?

At our old house we had a problem with the newly installed bathroom and the pipes under the porch. I learned if I left a 100 watt light on nothing froze. The porch was off/ over our walk out basement. I insulated but the light on worked fine.

I have a question about E bay and orders.

I bought a set of books but want to have them sent to my DIL in Florida. I contacted the seller to request the change. Does anyone here have experience in changing the shipping address to other places?

I want to buy things/gifts for my grand children and have them shipped directly to them. In some cases the shipping is free and there is not sense in having stuff come here first.

I don't know about ebay, but most online stores give you the option the enter a Billing Address and a Shipping Address. Usually there is a box you can check or uncheck to say "use this as my shipping address" or "shipping address is different from billing address"

No chickens stay in so they must be fine. Though of course the ones in the covered run aren't bothered. I do think I won't cover the runs up so much next year as they seem to like to eat the snow.

I have been finding frozen cracked eggs in the coops of late. Thee are a couple of hens who want to sleep in the nest boxes. I need more roosting space higher up.

I went to CM and bought a bale of straw and I'm not happy with it. It seems awfully light and may be smaller too. In fact the kid who loaded it mentioned how light it is.

I went to the farmers market and bought a bag of salad greens. I like to dump a load of grit on top of the greens so they don't get crop problems. I can't say that it helps but at least the grit is there.

It is cold for sure, but the marans are out of the coop into the yard. I do need to put some more straw down in front of the coop. The small hoops both have overhangs so at least part of the area stays snow free.

DW and I are discussing giving up chickens. I can save the money and take more trips south. It's hardly worth the work and over $100 I spend each month for 6 eggs a day, and that doesn't include shavings and water. Even though I sell eggs I doubt I'm breaking even. At the market they charge $3.00 - 3.50 a dozen. Of course they're much larger eggs since their most likely GC's or PR's.

SO? How many still have their Christmas tree up? Every year ours gets less and less ornaments put on. Pretty soon it will just have lights and that's it.

I couldn't find that on e-bay after my pay pal payment page. I did contact the seller though. Every year we spend better than $50 just in shipping stuff so I figured it's cheaper to just have stuff sent directly to them.

Also we did give my son and his in FL money to buy gifts but I wasn't happy with what they bought.

We have some chickens that keep trying to stay outside. The weird thing is they just started doing this during the worst weather. The two newest chickens and some random others. We went back to checking them every night. The two newest just started laying as well. -19 wind-chill yesterday and we had 7eggs from 7 chickens. Everyone continues to lay in the nest boxes in the coop.

I would suspect these ones are at the bottom of the pecking order . and dont want to be pecked up when they try to roost .
My younger ones roost 1st ...then there is less pecking . I would try putting them on them on the roost 1st .

Rancher--Nora is doing good. Growing like a weed and I think she may be working towards her first tooth already.

DW is on her way over to take the Queen sliding down the small hill in their yard. I do miss having them here but their parents drive me nuts.

When the Queen is here I'm on my own. She is the center of attention with Gramma.

Donovan and I get on quite well since we both like to do the same things. Eat and sleep.

I've decided for now to rehome my Buff Orp and Barred Rock hens I have. I'm going to relocate the trio of Orps - Gru, Stella and the Blue pullet to a smaller coop, keep them around for eggs with the option to hatch since I'll hang onto Gru.

I'm going to move my trio of silkies to the larger coop and add a trio of bantam cochins and hopefully a trio of frizzles. Hopefully I can find some nice adults for sale by spring so I can hatch this summer with my new incubator. I do have some splash silkie eggs coming so I'll be keeping 1-2 of those as well IF I have a successful hatch.

My girls seem quit happy to stay in the coop they don't like that horrible white stuff, or the ferocious wind, so please latch the door when you leave. They do like me to visit, and reward me with eggs, up to four a day lately. One day there were five. Sometimes there is a frozen one, and they are not always in the nest boxes. A couple were in the dust bath, some have been on the poop board, lots have been on the DL, sometimes with Earl standing over them. Can't decide if he is protecting it or about to stomp it with his big feet. But a few girls are laying in the boxes.
