NY chicken lover!!!!

Woke up to 63 degrees inside house, that does't ever happen. Furnace was on all night. When its windy like this my living room on the east side of the house is always warm cause the wind blows through the house & pushes the heat to that side...

I guess I"ll spend the day watching tv in that room....Old house needs insulation.
All birds ok. The ones on the inner part of the barn stay warmer cause the horses are inside as well. They help "heat" the barn. 20 degrees in there this am....

So, just keep horses inside your coops to keep your chicks warm...

I have someone interested in two of my hens coming today and I'm waiting to see if she wants to reschedule due this blistering cold weather. I can't see standing out there for more than 5 minutes. I should go pack the two up, bring them inside and run them out to her car when she gets here LoL

Well my house is so crappy the laid up stone let snow into the craw space and froze pipes. The water on the floor of my basement that drains to sup-pump froze. How much longer till summer??

Here is inside my coop today at 10 am. Wish I had pics of the girls last ngiht but I was tooo cold to worry about that.

2x4 opening at bottom of north wall window.

opening south facing wall at rafters.

north wall rafter openings

south facing wall. hard to see but that bottom square of snow is my pop door for chickens.

-6 outside -30 with wind chil. About 2 ft of snow. Temp in coop was 2 degrees and that was before I put a few tarps up inside where snow was still blowing in with the blizzard. Girls have a bowl of snow for water needs and bowl of bird seed. They are happy hens :) I did block the pop door. No need for them to go out. Tho they did sneak out when man door was open and I had to chase and catch them to put back in the coop.

JLaw - looks like a view from an artic horror movie ! ha ha

Yep - that wind sure did you in - nice set up - but for next winter you either need some wind breaks to hang down out side or some way to close it off during storms and open when nothing is falling from the skies.

You did right in getting the girls out of there. Brrrr

Wow JLaw! That is crazy! Glad you were able to configure a Plan B for those cheeps!!! I don't know what I would have done if I had that many birds.

Has anyone heard from Miquwid? Haven't heard from her in a while.

I went through my basement with "Stuff" and sealed all the cracks. You need to get some and go down there and fill them in. NOW! Sometimes we don't realize how much space is between the foundation and the exterior wall. There are two kinds of the "Stuff". Some for large cracks and some for smaller cracks.

It's so cold I saw Amish people buying electric blankets.

It was so cold my Amish neighbors left their buggy parked on the side of the road! Actually, guessing it was so icy getting up the driveway, that the horse couldn't pull it.

So, just keep horses inside your coops to keep your chicks warm...

I double blanketed my beasts last night, just to be sure. Two are older (24, 22) and the younger one hardly grows hair. Barn stays warmer than outside, but they don't heat it that much! The 6' roof overhang with open eaves are wonderful most time, this wicked wind is not one of those times.
Hubby stayed home to watch Little Girl and keep the woodstove burning. Our house has been keeping about 65 with the woodstove heating and furnace kicking on. Good thing about the furnace is the basement gets warmed. And I tasked Hubby with checking animals 2-3 times througout the day to break buckets, collect eggs and corn treats for everyone. And asked him to set up the brooder cage so we can bring the broken leg BR in. She is doing ok, but the others peck her so she is not getting sufficient feed/water, just hides all day. Of course then I will have the problem of reintroducing a lone chicken. Which means I should get her some buddies to be reintroduced with...

Look, I can post pictures! So happy!
these are just drying before they get crushed to go with the feed. Today Im planning on lots of treks out to get eggs. Got 5 eggs yesterday, but it was 1 degree this morning, so eggs will freeze quickly.
