NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks! That may be my weekend project! ;-) I have to venture out at some point and get bubbles for the kids, they've been wanting to do that blowing bubbles thing when the temp drops below 30 to see if the bubbles freeze instantly.

What fun. Look for the "indoor bubbles". They come in COLORS. Wouldn't that make a wonderful abstract design in the snow then the colors pop and land on the snow?

I am looking for a silver partridge silkie roo. I will be in the sales area and sometimes at the Marans egg table. Also might look for a sebastapol gander that has excellent curly feathers. I will be bringing Marans and coronation and silkie eggs for sale besides the chicks.

Do you think there will be Birchen Marans hatching eggs there? Other than yours of course.

There are many birds of prey in NY state. Heck, in the USA there are loads of birds of prey, google "birds of prey USA" and see how many come up.

They all look alike to me....only difference is size. And coloring. In the sky a red tail hawk looks exactly like an juvie bald eagle, to the naked eye. And they ALL eat meat. Last time I checked chickens were composed of meat. As soon as we breed chickens without meat we will eliminate all our predator problems, except the racoon, cuz they kill for fun....oh and the fisher and mink.

Edited to add: Ouch, there is even a owl that hunts in the daytime. Meatless chickens is the way to go. Remove the temptation for the birds of prey to visit.

I had a Falcon kill a bird. They're not big enough to carry them off. I'm not sure a Hawk is either, but may be. At least not my large orps. They're very heavy. I'd have to research, I may be wrong.

just got back from seeing Lone Survivor with my wife and son. My sonput it in words better than I can so I'll share his Fb update here.

"Saw Lone Survivor and it was pretty good movie. Although I left feeling like it is impossible to truly pay a perfect homage to those who fought on red wings that day, as Marcus Luttrell said in his book about Micheal Murphy "If they built a 100 foot statue of him, it wouldnt be tall enough for me". So I left the theater strangely dissatisfied but I love how these actors did truly display the suffering and the zeal and heroism displayed that day. Only a true warrior would fight to the last breathe and the actors did a good job showing the pain and determination they had."

I highly recommend the movie. The book is better. And I should read it again.

The book was wonderfully written and emotional as all get out. I don't plan to see the movie. I'm not sure I own enough Kleenex to get through it.

All my hawk attacks the hawk ate the chicken on my lawn. Only once did the chicken totally dissappear. It was a Sumantra....a small chicken, so totally possible the hawk was able to carry it off....or totally possible the hawk ate it's fill and something else carried it off. I am sure that both things happen...eating in place and carrying it to feed their young.

Quote: </p falcons and hawks have a different profile in the sky, wing shape is different, think of airplanes wings, a hawks wings are more horizontal, like a small plane, a falcons wings are more aerodynamic like a fighter jet, as they rely on amazing speed to stun and kill their prey. a good bird book is Petersens field guide, gives pics, details and their profile in the sky. look up American Kestrel, as they are also native to this area, usually see them in pairs.

Morning all. Rainy and gloomy here. Lots of water under the snow. I think dh will get to use his pump a few times today to pump out the back yard. The terrorists are not thrilled with the rain but its better than the evil white stuff. Still only getting 3 eggs a day from them. I hope they start picking up soon. My egg customers are getting antsy to get real eggs again. Somebody asked me what brand gmo feed I am using. Its green mountain. I like it very much. Smells good when you open the bag and the cheeps seem to like it. Poos are nice and firm and less stinky. Going to put twiggy back in the terrorist coop tonight after dark and monitor the coop tomorrow. She hasnt been in there for two weeks since we pulled her out because of her injury. She is walking fine now and has put on some weight so hopefully she will be accepted back into the flock. Living in a cage in my basement is no life for a chicken and its extra work for me. However, I had to give her a chance to heal and thrive.

Havent heard of Lone Survivor. I will have to see if I can get it on my nook. I like to read the books before seeing the movies.

Crocheting isnt hard to learn. I just bought an instruction book and learned it that way. Rancher is right though about the directions. I am working on a sweater for my dd right now and the directions are not always written very clear. I had to make pleats in the bottom and the directions were so convoluted that I drew on my sewing skills and figured out an easier way of making them. I like the challenge though. You do have to work your mind otherwise you will be ripping things out if you arent paying attention.

Off to the pharm today. With this weather we will either be really busy or dead. Hoping for dead. I need a break. Stay safe and dry in this weather everyone.
