NY chicken lover!!!!

Sure you can. Sincerely. Just don't let the Health Department know you are baking in your own kitchen. Cuz they will have a LOT to say about that. And the Zoning board where you live. And the neighbors, if you are selling from your house.

I think I am hoping for a total collapse of society, so we can start over and DO IT RIGHT this time.

We'll have to develop a senior citizen "black market" for healthy food items. Drive around in a covert vehicle to take secret transactions for such things as homemade cookies, and denture friendly organic meals for those days when meals on wheels doesn't deliver.

So ... how's this for germa-phobe horror story ....

About 20 feet along the back door of my old barn the horses stand and churn up the ground until they have a patch a pig would love - about 3 feet deep of sucking, poop created muddy mess.

Coming out to do something in the paddock - walking with momentum pushing me forward and my hands full of something  - the mud sucked hold of my boot and my foot came out ... it was either loose my balance and face plant in horse poo or keep my step and come down bare foot (after all, I never have time for socks and it wouldn't have made this better) in the goo.

So I finished my chore with one boot one and bare foot slopping around in horse-poo mud ... then pulled up my boot and headed to the shower.

:sick

Frankly - I hear of more chickens dying in places that coddle them - they NEED to be exposed to the dirt and some stress for their bodies to grow strong.  Human immune systems that are not exposed to pet hair, dirt and other "icky" stuff suffer and most likely develop asthma.   I know it sounds a little preachy -but really  - if you are too clean and fussy ... you are fighting a loosing battle, wasting your time and still not being as healthy as you are striving for.

And it feels good to have your hands in good dirt - it really does.  I also like to run my hands along the leaves of my fruit trees - like petting them.

Baha that sounds like when I landed flat out going up the path to my chicken coop, path was all mucky with poo and what not from the rain and my darling ducks and I slipped as I got to the top, wearing a dress (sans undergarments lol) and got absolutely caked from head to toe and everywhere in between with poo/mud, I pouted back to the house and for a few minutes it got me thinking maybe I wanted to be a city kid with no animals, then I took a shower and sat out in the sun watching the animals and kids playing and realized sometimes a bit of poo is worth it lol

ICk. That's as bad as the duck taking flight in the coop and poop hitting me right in the mouth. Even listerine didn't make my mouth feel fresh after that. I no longer talk to the chickens in the coop. I keep my mouth totally SHUT until I am closing the door saying "night girls, see you tomorrow"

Yup had that happen too, and in the eye bleuk ducks sure can be dirty littlE critters sometimes lol

Evening all. Quite the discussion going on here. I miss a lot when I am at work! I am working hard on getting healthy and do a lot of label reading (and reading in general). One would eat nothing if you knew what all that stuff was listed in the ingredients. Try finding products without corn in it. My oldest child was allergic to corn when she was a baby/toddler, would break out terribly in huge welts and swell up. Corn is in everything so I started making all her food from fresh fruit and veggies and meat. Spent weekends cooking and pureeing so she could eat. She outgrew it eventually. Guess the point is we have to decide what we are willing to put into our bodies. Lots of pros and cons about everything so you really have to read lots to get a clear picture.

Why---like all babies, chicks need to be exposed to the environment to build immune systems. The weak will die and the strong will live. My silkies are my babies but they start off life with momma in their coop walking through everyones poop and being cared for by the whole flock. You will lose some at some point. Everyone does. We cry and then move on. Its the circle of life.

Stony--thanks for the link. I bookmarked it. I will look at it in depth later to see what he has. I want to try some of the seeds he had listed.

Rancher--you do love that queen despite what gma does!

Cass--what breed is that rooster that laid an egg? Are you selleing hatching eggs?

Ok--off to eat dinner. I will be back to see what you all are up to.

I gotta work tonight. Private duty. Really good money, so I am not complaining, but I don't have internet access at work. I am gonna miss a lot of posts until I get home. Try not to miss me.

And out the door I go.

Pharm: It was a Brahma roo. The only survivor from the dozen I tried to hatch from BrahmaPapa (where Did he go, btw?) My plan was to put some Australorps with "him" and hatch some wonderfully large egg laying hens and extra large sized roos for the freezer. Guess I won't be doing THAT now, will I? Instead I put a production breed roo (my favorite roo, actually) in with HER and am hoping for a large offspring that lay an egg every day.
