NY chicken lover!!!!

Jlaw they are cute congrats!
Today is lockdown and my two eggs are moving and shaking around in there! I love it! I've never gotten to experience that before my hatches have always been in the LG and I've always placed them in egg cartons. It's so cool to see them roll a little in the Brinsea! If they're moving this early do you think they'll pip early? I'm soooooo excited!!!!
I love that part too plus all the chirpping from the eggs.
:sick :sick Good garden o' peas I have to start wearing my hat at the computer now, thanks to you!

Oh lords rancher lol
Here's the link to a video I made this morning of one of my eggs wiggling around.
Thats awesome so happy you got ur incubator!
We have a large black (poultry unit) that we fill with water....and we have an olf fashioned cylindar electric unit. The container is LARGE and holds enough water for 3 days for 10 chickens. AND IT NEVER FREEZES. In the addition to the 21% proterin Agway Feed with give scratch and greens. Greems that we eat. The trimmings, carrots peel, etc. Our chickens are layiing fine 3 - 4 -5 eggs daily. Life is good. Regards, Aria
Good to hear! We are getting 7 - 10 and just use and electric dog bowl for water. I use a local made feed non gmo plus all tge table scraps they want. The clean bones so darn well perfect for the fire pit or compost.
I think I need some kind of support group. I've been in and out of the coops about 20 times today. I'm waiting for eggs. Not just any eggs but specific ones. I'm waiting for one more silkie egg and finally got my last blue mottled cochin egg a few minutes ago. I have 19 barnie eggs, 3 of my first cross for blue mottled cochins, 3 splash silkies and 3 black silkies. I need one more and I hoping for another splash. I've definitely got my exercise for the day.
Lol i hope you get ur egg!
I hear that compulsive coop checkers are closely related to compulsive hand washers, in fact the same subjects may exhibit both disorders.
Hahahahahaha
or blue or splash or platinum or khaki :D . I have a lot of blues and quite a few splash. Now and then I get a platinum. Never had a khaki
They are beautiful!
I love it!

Evening all! The sun was much appreciated today. Gave everyone a nice big lunch today which they thoroughly enjoyed. It was windy today as well and the cheeps didnt like that. Mostly stayed inside their coops. Finally got the sweater back ripped apart and fixed. Lots of work.

Aria--where did you get your waterer?

Stony--as usual, not stumped.

Rancher--nice hat collection.

WELL We had a real Hawk attack today . Most of time it has been a FLY OVER My other son was visiting today so I didnt spend as much time with the chickens like I normally do . We were watching tv ...I said what was the sound ? We thought it was a wolf on TV ..I stopped the TV to listen .. Didnt hear any thing for a few seconds Started it back up .. THen the 16 chicken alarm went off ..I threw open the back door ... It looked like Little Skiddy Sumatra against the side of the coop hiding under stuff .. Chicken alarm still blaring ! I could nt see anything .. so I ran out the side door of the house to the coop ..No coat No Sweat shirt ...just sneakers Black Feathers all over the place next to the gate .. I heard something in the run ..I go in it was a HAWK ! I see the sheet in there ..I throw it over the hawk & catch him .. Bring him inside he is as still as can be ..What do I do with him ? Take him back out side ..open the sheet he flies .. away I hope he is smart enough to stay away .. .He was very Pretty light breast with spots ..I think it was a red tailed Hawk . Skiddy Seems okay ! he is missing a lot of tail feathers & some feathers on the back of his neck .. I dont see any where that he is bleeding .. I brought him inside to look at him & give him treats . Cat Food< - he helped himself to that .. , and Grapes ..and lots of praise Here is a bunch of his feathers still more in the run & in front of the coop Liittle TT is definitely Broody ...Tail up ! Makes these little clicking sounds ..She has a bare breast too She talks to me ...but she doesnt peck me & lets me take eggs I take her off a nest she eats like a pig then goes right back on. She wants babies NOW ..its too cold for babies outside I dont know whether to let her set on a fake egg or just take all the Eggs away ?
We had a hawk attack today and were not so fortunate. I lost my best broody (salmon faverolles). Poor thing. She was such a sweet bird. Why is it always the ones you like the most? It is back in the covered run until migration is over, or at least until the snow meslts and they are not so easy to spot.

this hen is beautiful ! I want one ! These ones arent free range ?
that was recorded on VH's 92-93 tour. And yup, Sammy Hagar has always worn and still wears crazy clothing .
Nope, I have a few breeding pens. The splash's are in one of the breeding pens. I hatch a LOT , well ok, my girls hatch a lot of chicks. Maybe 50 to 100 a year. I get very few splash's.

We lost one of our roos just a couple weeks ago

, to a hawk. I think this extreme winter has them desperate for food. While I understand they need to eat too...I wish they'd stick to the rodents in the back field or far far away! Our roo Derk, was free ranging and he tried to get to his roost, but didn't make it in time. We definitely learned a lesson with this. My hubby didn't hear a sound and said Derk was nearly 3x the size of the hawk. But they are such fierce hunters, they know just where to impact. He ate his throat, and even with a 6' tall man chasing and screaming at him, he still was tough to run off and completely out of the yard. And he came back the next day! So I do think it's something to continue to watch out for, since the hawk may now see a potential food source. Hopefully being captured was enough to shake the hawk up and not want to come back.
The dumb hawk hasn't been back here since the day after he ate one of my sweet boys' throats out...and heaven help him if he does!!!

Today at 5:51 pm We had a hawk attack today and were not so fortunate. I lost my best broody (salmon faverolles). Poor thing. She was such a sweet bird. Why is it always the ones you like the most? So sorry ..I hate those suckers !
It may have happened so fast they didnt have time to give a alarm
I also like to go outside randomly / occasionally & check on the chickens while they are ranging .
I have caught hawks many times doing a fly over
Hawks are fearless ..I also had them fly over me .. on its way to a chicken
It didnt land though I chased right after it

JUST A THOUGHT :
would having a bird feeder for smaller birds ..be a distraction / attraction for the hawk ?
Would they be more apt to go for the smaller bird for a meal ?

Liittle TT
I dont know whether to let her set on a fake egg or just take all the Eggs away ?
TT came out at roosting time ..
I thought she was going to roost with the rest tonight...she did for a min or two .
Then she went back into the nest box with her fake egg .
what does everyone think ?

Finally got a photo of Pearl standing next to Duane. I really need to get a scale out there one of these days and weigh them both.

Also Frenchie is FINALLY growing in those bald feathers.

Not sure what makes the difference; if the weather has killed off some fungus or parasite she had that went unnoticed, if the flock block is helping prevent self pecking, or if the growth was triggered by her molt. She's been bald in at least one spot since I got her on and off. I miss her laying though. She's a fantastic layer for me.
