NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi I like the second one.

As for using horse manure for your garden I would never use it. The horses don't digest all the grains and if you use it on the garden you'll end up with lots of weeds. But I have been told that it is the best for roses.

I use horse manure and there are differing opinions on the weed thing. However if it's composted properly the heat of the process should kill any seeds. I do use raised beds though. It makes weeding easier. Of course a good mulch always helps. I used cardboard collected from the school. Keeping in mind to not use it fresh from the source. Spread in the fall a good winters snow should help. I'm a big fan of raised bed gardening. Maintenance is so much easier.

I have used horse manure in the past. The hens do love to dig thru it. And yes I did have a lot of weeds last year which I figured was from the manure. I will still use it if its free again on craigs list though. I need to save cardboard like Rancher suggested tho. That might just do the trick of keeping the weeds down. I have been saving milk jugs to use this spring for new plants & am going to try planting some plants in hay bales also. I saw it in a magazine & it said you could start earlier. Might as well reuse those bales that around the coop as long as I have them

Afternoon all. I came home and was greeted by Thelma. She was right there when I opened the car door. I swear she is part dog. Louise was on the other side and Bill was checking things out from the side of the house. Dh let them out to wander. Good news is that we got 6 eggs yesterday and 5 today so things are looking up! Hopefully this continues so my egg customers will be happy again.

I looked at those prefab coops but I think I am just going to get some pallets and make a grow out coop from them. They are free and we have a ton of screws and nails and some leftover hinges and such so it should be little to no cost. The big project this spring is to get legolas coop moved and new fencing put up. I will be moving lots of rocks by hand. Going to build some raised beds along the one side of the big terrorist run and those rocks will be my walls. Should work out all right.

Still getting a little snow here. Have to go find out whose foot is bleeding. Dh said he could see some bloody footprints in the snow.

Ta for now!

Iv'e been advocating using milk jugs for years. You can see the one in the middle has a can around the base. I plant my Okra, tomatoes and peppers in cans to save on watering.

This year I'd like to do some rain barrels. There is a set on Pinterest that I like made with two black garbage cans.

Cardboard breaks down nicely and if you let the chickens inside in the fall they tear it up and eat the slugs. If you didn't get it down before the snow you can do it now. There is sure to be more snow and if it rains that helps too. I'm still laying it down. Anywhere you want to kill weeds or grass it will do the trick.

Right now I have a large area covered where I hope to dig a small pond for the coming ducks. This area seems to collect water. I dug a trench along the run and coop so the water drains into it too.

Pharm - I was going to build one out of those shipping crates again but I can't do anything in this snow!

I have no "workspace" to build anything. I need something soon because I'm going to be picking up 3 additional silkies next weekend and I also have 2 sizzles coming in when it warms up. So when it gets warmer out I WILL build breeding pens out of those shipping crates.

Just got inside from cleaning out my shed. My back is feeling better so I decided to remove the coop that was in there to give the silkies a little more room. I decided to just pen them up in there. They're loving it!

Well, I'm after the fact, but I thought the one like the one you have was the better choice. The gable roof would be stronger, it had ventilation, you know what it's like, and the other one had stuff I didn't like. The flat roof one looks a lot like the TSC one I got which is fragile. The roosts awe too low, you don't need all those nest boxes, the little door that becomes the ramp would have to have some sort of secure closure, a raccoon would be in there in no time. Deep litter wouldn't be very deep. And from the Martha Stewart part of me, the two will match and can complement each other in your landscape...

Welcome to the new folks, Berner Mom, I love your avatar, And I have a Newfie, so we're almost sisters.

You know....I just have to say...upon moving to NY from CT back in 2008, not a year goes by that I don't experience an act of kindness that makes me happy I moved here. The town I came from was small - everybody knows everybody kind of town. People there can be snotty and are all out for themselves, can care less to help others. Well every time I make a trip to CT, if I'm looking for something at that moment in time I always post on the CT thread on here. I'll jump over there and ask if anyone has any of this or that or knows of anyone who does because I'm coming down there from this date to this date. And not only do I post what I'm looking for, but I've also posted things for sale or for others in case someone down there was looking to purchase. ALL 3 times, not a single response to any of my posts! Not even an acknowledgment! Like if I post here, at least someone will chime in and say something in response. CT I feel like they skip right over my post and carry on. Like they're too good to answer to me. Just makes me so mad. So I'm done doing that ever again. And in the meantime still loving my new NY "family".
