NY chicken lover!!!!

I think they are both TOO SMALL for people that are infected with MORECHICKENS disease .
The flaw I see in the 2nd one is that it has a flat roof .so there would be build up on top ...potential rotting of the roof

There is a slight slant to the roof and these might be okay in a warm only areas, BUT they would work if in a covered and secure run such as inside a large hoop. I was thinking I could use it for Ducks inside the outer portion of this hoop. Or inside a garage. It would certainly work for spring time and summer broodies.

if you put it all in the same place you have got a GREAT compost pile ...that you can put on plants & Vegetables for natural fertilizer

One year at our old house I dug up along our sidewalk and just tossed in packages of those flower mixes they sell and we had a very nice flowery border with little work. You could do just that.

Welcome! Glad that there are other NY's. I am in upstate NY near Saratoga Springs. I am starting a new flock this spring with a variety pack of heavy birds to see which ones I like the best. Getting 20 altogether and am so excited. Will update with pictures of the coop building when we break ground in a month or so. Just love this site as there is so much info and such nice people (well most anyway). Can't wait to start trading birds!

Welcome to the madness. I agree it's a great place to get help and ideas. Some of us come off like Martha Stewart ( she was just on) but we mean well.

What are you getting? We need to know so we can show you others and get you hooked on them as well. Keep in mind Silkies are NOT real chickens, but aliens from another planet. You really might want to make your tinfoil hat now.

For all the newbies there is a picnic in the works for May. (am I out of line for mentioning it since I'm not hosting ? )

No problem ..things happen esp with phones ...LOL this web site can be cranky some times ...and not work just right either

Good Idea ! Chickens have TOO Many Predators ..I guess everything likes Chicken .
Do yours free range ? ours do ..only when we are home to watch out for them
yes sometimes i let them out they not even year old yet got them in July. And last year I found. We had a pear tree they love to eat them. And go in the compost pile

The compost pile is a chicken's dream location. I actually gave up keeping mine near the garden (where it SHOULD be) and put it near the coop. Keeps the chickens out of the garden that way and closer to cover (the coop) if a hawk flys over. Remember chickens have bird brains and see you throw stuff in the pile, so they go over to see if it is good to eat. (And it usually is, to a chicken, at least)

Lnz777 - I like the second one best - looks like you can get into all spots easier.

Welcome All newbies - I had your names, was doing a mantra with them & started to type and forgot ! ha ha So just WELCOME .....

Welcome! Be careful in here or you might catch morefowl disease. Of course, I think everyone with chickens catches it eventually - it's very contagious! What breeds are you getting, or will it just be a random assortment?

I'm going to take a vote because I came across another coop that Iike for my Orps. Now keep in mind, these guys will be free ranging every day, so these coops will be a sleeping quarters only along with "shelter" from the rain, snow etc. Which one do you like better?

http://cconly.com/coop__hutches/cc-18_series - Coop Only, No run.

Or this one

The first one, from CCOnly, is what the ducks are in right now. That was my first original coop that I started with and before I got the new larger coop, I had Gru and the 3 hens in there and there was plenty of space for each of them at night. Pictures are hard to go by an that's why I need opinions on the 1st one as well. Looks small in the pictures but the measurements are larger than the 2nd.

Thought I'd mention that one things I had to do was put a block of about 6" in front of the doors so the shavings didn't spill out and block the doors from closing.

I like the second coop, but wonder how that will work out. Plus how well or sturdy that floor is.

Thanks Everyone,
I decided to order the one from CCOnly. I didn't like how the second one didn't have any ventilation from what I could see. At least I have the one from CCOnly already and know what to expect. It will be perfect for the trio of the Orps plus one more if I ever hatch out a splash orp hen. As long as I stain it before putting it to use it should last me at least 2-3 years. The one I have the ducks in right now is going into it's 3rd year and is still in good shape.
