Evening all. Drove home in a snow squall tonight. Couldnt see much beyond my hood. Temp is dropping like a stone. I locked up the silkies and closed up their windows to keep the wind out. The terrorists were all roosting together to keep warm. Got 9 eggs from them today. Plan on setting up the bator tomorrow and firing it up. I will set eggs on sunday. If anyone thinks they might want some mutt chicks come the May picnic, let me know asap so I know how many eggs to hatch. I may have some heritage rir available depending on how these eggs hatch. If you just want hatching eggs, they are rir roo over barred rocks and hatchery reds. The girls will be two in march and are now laying large to extra large eggs. They are also good eating as well.

My silkies were mad I left for work today. They like being able to roam around when I am home. I just want all this ice to melt so I dont have to worry about falling when I am doing chores.

I hope everyone stays warm and safe and their chickens stay well. Ducks too!

Closed up the chickens with no gloves had to run two fingers under water they hurt so much.

I've two lights over the ducklings but still worry they might go out. I've lost chicks with this happening. I can't handle it if it happens again.

Day 14 on the incu. May candle again.

Now I have to say I've had a hard time maintaining the humidity. How do folks do it? Iv'e a Genesis 1588.

I have a pair of Khaki's and the 2-3 eggs I got from her last year, before this extreme cold set in, were bright white. Now if I begin getting a green egg then I'll be curious as to where that white one came from

I've got Storeys' book and have been looking up ducks. Perhaps I'm wrong. I'll get back to you on that. I do know Cayugas start out laying black but then they fade as time goes by.

I nearly got Khaki Campbells cuz they lay green eggs and as many as chickens. You could certainly fence off an area of the creek to keep them in. I don't think it's that deep.

Peacocks are nice and noisy I understand.
I was talking with a guy at the Regional market who sells exotic meats and he said he can't get enough Ostrich or Emu. Just don't tell you wife I suggested it or she'll find a gun and shoot me.

Yes, peacocks are noisy, but if you can make it through the noise of guineas, you could have an F-16 as a pet and it would be no problem

With my 1588 i cut sponges up and put in the trouths. I find that it lowers slower. I also try to do a full bator if i dont have enough i use store eggs as buffers for temp and humidity. I also ran fish air lines into bator so i dont have to open it to add water. I use an oral syringe to pur water into the air lines.

Blue is the sponges in this picture. I also put a piece of bent fish tank air line on another syringe so i can add water to other parts of bator not just where my two main lines go in.

Edit. If you look close at bottom of that picture you can see the fish tank air lines coming in through two air vents.

I can do that ...My Americanas lay green eggs . no hogs though ..
Can you get a ladder up to them? & Take a broom & push them off ?
I think they may be scared to come down ..they have got to be hungry by now
Most chickens fly up on a whim ...but I have noticed to get down they hem & haw ...( start off then stop again & again .)and second guess themselves..

I'm going to disagree with Lynzie on this. I have ducks, and they are fine without a pool. As long as they have a bucket that holds water so they can dunk their heads in it to clear their nasal passages, they are fine. A kiddie pool would be heaven to a duck. Why not? Better than a bucket. Not all of us have a stream or pool on our property.

Ok I need to clarify...I guess I worded that and lacked some info. It wasn't the fact that they were using a kiddie pool. Heck I used a kiddie pool for mine before I made the pond from the water run off. It's the fact that that's all they have me for info. No info about how large their property was, they could have no yard at all. And I would rather see them go to a home with a yard where they can forage rather than be kept in a cage of some sort and let out into a pool. What about a yard!?! Sorry, my last post lacked info...

Yeah that does make more sense. And of course you have the choice of where you sell them.

I just don't want them penned up their whole life. And that's what this person is making it out to sound if they can't even tell me where they'll be housed or if they have a yard for them at least.

This winter has been long and tough for everyone, humans and critters alike. Now I know where the expression "all cooped up" came from. It's just BRUTAL. I've got a lot of ice around the pathways to the coop from the compressed / melted / refrozen snow. Some slippery treks to and from the girls' house!

I opened up the "man side" of the coop for my "core four" yesterday. It's only a gravel floor, and I usually don't like them in there because of the poop, obviously, but they wanted to get in there to peck around and boy, did they ever have themselves a glorious dust bath in that gravel! It was hilarious. They were in complete ecstasy! I ended up letting them run around between their side and mine for a couple of hours. They had a blast, and so now there are some frozen poops to clean at some future point. Oh well. They were happy!

Still no eggs from Gertie, my Brabanter, but the other hens are laying well. I got 5 eggs of the 6 laying birds today. Just love sharing them with family and friends.

I do feel badly for my birds with this ridiculous, prolonged and windy cold weather. When will it end...? ** Sigh........... **
