NY chicken lover!!!!

Started working on my quail pen today :) I got the 2 main side pieces started on (got all the pieces cut and one side put together ) I am going to make it in parts in my basement and then brave the cold and put them together outside, had a bit of troubles with the angles at first but once I got going I am more confident I can build it myself :) just need to set aside a couple kid free hours each day lol

It's horrible! I keep thinking there is one out there, now alone to brave the night...not knowing if it is on the ground starving to death, or has already been taken in the night

Everyone else is cozy in the coop and he is out there wondering where everyone is

The one I found today has tucked himself away in a nesting box and did not want to come out and the others are perched and crying out...perhaps letting the other one know where they are, I don't know, but I didn't try to quiet them just in case they really do have a connection.

Strangely enough I think they do have a connection at times. I have some hens who insist on being with certain roosters.

When I first got chickens, I drove to Amsterdam and bought 4 C. Marans. They used to go around the yard in a pack. They even knew which coop to go in. Even though the all the others went in to the other. They just never mixed as a flock.

They can also build a bond with You in that they know if someone else is NOT you.

The ones that have returned do have a different disposition...much more docile and friendly toward me

Im Glad most of them came back ...Hopefully they have learned their lesson .
They now know where their bread is buttered & who buttered it ! YOU !

JWebb -This has been totally turkey week for me ...
Yes those are wild ones 10- 15 ..what was really funny was the chickens were in the run ...enclosed in semi - clear plastic ...
I dont know how but they made a racket when the turkeys went by ...they knew they were out there .
Monday I went to the vet 10 miles away from my house ...on the way back a flock of turkeys crossed the road ...
Then the started all flying ....Amazing ! they flew above the trees ...I would have thought they were to heavy to fly that much ...
I always see them walking
Today going to the P Office I saw 3 more crossing the road about a mile from my house

Speaking of which , I'm up three Dels and one EE.  So far not one Birchen Marans even though there are quite a few pips.

I hope these Dels are girls cuz I found one on the floor of the coop this afternoon.  No idea what was wrong.  Her crop was empty and I didn't notice anything this morning.

I'm surprised you have a limit.  What is it?

We are limited to 6 hens that are egg laying purposes only. No roosters. There are limits as to how far off the property line your coop keep needs to be, how far from a neighbors house, etc. thankfully my lot is an acre so the limits of where the coop needs to be are not a problem. I also am not good at counting :D My neighbors like my hens so I have no fear of an inspection & counting of hens.

And when I asked the guy how he would know if the chicken in my freezer was from my yard or the store he just laughed. Apparently they don't check freezers :D

Hello from the freezing Hudson Valley of New York!

Anyone know where to get local or fairly local started pullets?

Welcome! There is someone in Saugerties who advertises in Craigslist all the time. If you look on facebook for the Sloansville Poultry page there are people who have pullets. Look for Phil Metzger, he is in Schoharie and has a good reputation.

Morning all. A little warmer this morning and the boys were after the girls this morning. Spring must be coming. Lynzi--let it warm up to room temp and then put it in. Always a chance it will develop. Glad to hear she is laying. Silkies always seem to lay when you dont want them to and stop when you need them to. At least thats what my girls have been doing! Marquesella--nice score! I would be in too much trouble if I had an incubator that big! Cant wait to see it all cleaned up and running. Off to the pharm. Its hump day! Happy Hump Day from the terrorists!
I had wondered who "the terrorists" were. They sure do look as if they are on a mission! :)
