NY chicken lover!!!!

Now it gets very wet here so I worm twice a year or so. If it's dry where you are worm should not be a problem.

Chicks do not need vitamins. Their feed will have everything they need. Just food and water is good enough. You can destroy their kidneys with all this junk they put out. Lots of stuff being sold is not necessary and is just a way to make money. Don't be a sucker. DO NOT BE OVERLY MOTHERING. They don't need treats and all that stuff. They're not like cats and dogs.

Chicks are babies they eat, sleep and poop. It's not good to pester them 24/7. Stress is the number one killer.
Ok thank you! I didn't know if chicks had worms already like puppy will? glad to know they do not. Its not typically wet ground here but can be in the summer if we get a ton of rain.. I agree, there are so many gimmick products out there! This was the vitamin electroylte mix for stress I thought I should use at first since they just were moved. They seem to be really reselient tho and settled right in. Bursting with health. Been about 40 years since I had chickens lol. So ok they don't need the vitamin water .. sounds good simple is good. I'm not going to mother or handle them too much, I just take my time when changing water and papertowels etc so they are getting used to me and don't freak out, my DH talks to them when he goes in the room to get something and they perk up and listen...lol.. I did give them some greens so they can mess with and eat if they want I think they played and chased each other with them more than ate them. Other than that they just get the chick feed, no medicated crumbles, I don't smell coccidia and the droppings are nice looking, no dirty butts etc. I'm amazed at how fast they grow.. some are getting "feathers" vs. the down already..

Afternoon All!
Been running all weekend. About to head out again soon to bring the kids to a movie.

Wednesday is lockdown for my eggs and all 5 are still going strong! I think I found my new method of hatching! I also found a small temp gauge that tracks humidity. Had one here in my house this whole time!

I plan to add water on Wednesday and see how the humidity levels pan out in the Brisnea for the last three days of lockdown. Right now the arrow has been pretty steady at 25 with no water in there at all. This is the best hatch I've had yet! I've never had 5 eggs ALL make it this far.

Got my 2nd egg from my Blue Orp today. Still nada from the ducks.

Edited to add: my eggs in the Brinsea are also moving already!!!! I'm so excited!

good luck with the hatch Lynzi~!

Hmmmmm....I've never wormed my flock. And mine won't eat squash or pumpkin seeds! I've only had my flock for not quite a year, yet...but so far haven't had any issues with illness or anything like that.

Because of the snow pack, our coop is getting quite muddy (we used sand as a substrate). Perhaps I should consider worming them this year? Is there a downside?

DONT WORM BABIES
- I also have never wormed my flock .
So far havent had a problem with worms ..they free range 1/2 of the day .

The downside :
is worms can kill them ...but you usually have some sign of them in their poop BEFORE THAT .
And like Cass mentioned they would be off laying also .

I regularly add raw onions to their bread / vegetable/ leftovers treat .
Occasionally I give them Pumpkin or squash seeds ..once in a great while I give them Garlic / Cayenne Pepper..when I remember to.

Finally got all eleven silkies groomed and washed. Feet and butts anyways. Cleaned their coops and freshened their runs with leaves. Those leaves smell so good when you open the bag! Okay..I have pics of the silkies I have for sale. Dont look Rancher!

Pullet 1

Pullet 2

Pullet 3

I have more pics in an album on my page. I am offering them to you folks here on the forum first before I offer them locally. Father is a light blue splash, mothers are a splash, blue and porcelain. Please pm me if you are interested in them. I know that at least two of the pullets are laying eggs.

Not as warm today as I was expecting but I did get stuff done. Lots of mud everywhere! The terrorists are out now walking around through the mud and drinking the dirty water puddles. Kinda makes you wonder why you keep their waterers so clean!

Theres my first little chicks I have in the spare bedroom right now its too cold to be outside for sure!, Mottled Java and Brabanters. The big Brabanter is the boss and I see the other chicks follow that one and learn... there are two younger Brabanter I was worried they were too small to be with the other guys but everyone is getting along good and the little guys are already growing. My two cats are very interested in them but I think in a good way, they sit on the table and watch quietly while I do the feed and water.
Cuties all of them .
Thanks for sharing your chick Eye Candy
The big Brabanter is the boss- Probably a ROO

Cats like chicks ...can kill them .
If your cats are like mine ...they will not be interested any more ..once they figure out what they grow up into ! ..He avoids even the chicks now .

Lapeerian, Deb called back. She is not using her incubator this year, but she has some broodies that are hatching mostly Buff Orpingtons and a few SS. Later in the season she may hatch from Welsummers. She is looking for a Partridge Rock roo. She has some EE, but no americauna pure chicks as she needs a roo. So there you have it. She says feel free to call and see what she has.

Well, egg production is coming up nicely. Don't know if its the warmer weather with actual sunshine, or the cabbage I've been giving them. Yes, cabbage. It works, takes a few days then they start laying, and it helps with egg eating & pecking.

My new-old incubator is up to 93 degrees now, but I have on order a new heating element that an experienced redwood incubator refurbisher assures me that it will do the trick. The incubator is out in my unheated barn. I will be so glad to not incubate eggs in my house anymore...I hope to put eggs in it by the en d of the week...keep fingers crossed.

Got 2 Sebastapol eggs today....so exciting. I'm really liking my water fowl. They really should spell if water foul...honestly their poops are pretty foul!

Cayuga ducks are mating, but no eggs yet. I might just dig a small pond in the backyard for them when breeding season is over. I would love to sit on the patio & watch the geese & ducks swim peacefully around...I must really be getting old...

How much are you asking and where are you located, I may be interested in 2 pullets if they don't have to be sold together :)
