How many eggs do you have ? I hope you have a HUGE Coop ...or do you plan on sharing these babies ?
One thing I noticed the more you have... the less tame they are ...the less you handle them .
Last year I got 11 various ones ....from Cass . I didnt handle them as much ..I didnt know which ones were ROOOs..Didnt want to get attached .
Knew they would die ...& be eaten . A couple of the Americana are vicious when they are in the nesting box ...( they are not even broody )
If they go Broody I am going to wear ARMOR !
My comets RIR , & white plymouth rocks are not like that ..if they are setting they let me take out a egg ...if I am there collecting

I'm excited to see them the Barnevelders are so gorgeous imo and the eggs look really nice! I like what i have read about their personality. Your pic of your Barnevelder is beautiful! I really like the BYC for all the threads on all the birds and everything else under the sun. Its all here!

I hope to have a good yard of chickens and a turkey pen by the end of summer. My two main projects are large fowl Orloffs

and the 2nd project is Auburn Java which I have no eggs for yet but will get some in the next week or so and see how it goes. I bought 3 eggs off ebay last month ( stupid me, the odds for shipping eggs can be so bad sometimes) and they were all duds. Next time I am buying from a breeder and give myself some better odds.

Next weekend I have Cream Legbars and the Barnevelders to hatch with the few Orloff eggs that will make it. I just set RIR and Barred Rocks tonight in the bator for some layers. That will keep me busy now for a while growing all these chicks.

Lost count on how many cups of coffee I let get cold today going to the hatcher and seeing what going on in there

Hopefully we'll have some better days now please God! Well the comets are lucky little chicks you noticed them !

I put the Brabanter and Mottle Java chicks in with the Orloffs and everyone is getting on fine thankfully. That made room for these little silkies and all in the brooder.

I am hoping they arent all comets ...( in a red pullet bin ) but I think they are ..they are identical except for the blue coat spray
This one we call angel

I also had a Tractor Supply sick chick come home with me Gramma. Today actually. They gave her to me for free to try to save, but I had to buy others in order to have her. They had a bin of mixed pullets so I got some of those and two partridge rocks. Unfortunately the little sick pullet died while I was out with Baking and Metella :( Well, at least I know I gave her a chance. And I'm 98% sure three of the pullets I got are dark brahmas, which would be nice because I do love brahmas. Such gentle giants.

Sorry you tried to give it a life .I paid a 1.00 for each chick ...there just happened to be 6 of them
One of the 6 seems goofy ...I dont see it eat or drink with the rest ..it stands & stares or sleeps .
I took it out & got it to eat some when I was holding it ..not sure it will live ..

Morning all! Five chicks hatched overnight and more are zipping and pipping! The babies are beautiful. I dont know who has been in there more, dh or the cat. I will be getting the brooder ready when I get home from work. Hoping for lots more babies over the next couple of days. Congratulated Bill on being a dad. He didnt look impressed. Maybe he was worried about paying child support on so many children?

Supposed to be 50 today which means mud city. Not liking this one bit but maybe more snow will go. Off to the pharm for a another day in paradise.

No need for Armor, but long sleeves and GLOVES are a must. And I don't mean those sissy ones from the dollar store, I mean leather man's work gloves. I use a bucket or dishpan (cuz I have one in the coop) to push their head off to the side when I reach under a broody that I haven't given eggs to yet. I use my elbow to push her head off to the side if I am going to pick her up and check for "extra" eggs, after I have decided how many I am going to allow her to hatch. I don't get pecked much....but I did have a silkie (god rest her soul) that would go after my elbow if I wasn't quick in getting her off the nest. Ouch, tyvm.

Then there is Momma. Momma won't get off the nest unless I lift her off, which I do daily (twice a day in the heat). I pick her up and set her on the floor....she jets to the food pan and gobbles down about a cup of food. Then she zips over to the water and drinks about 10 big gulps. Then she stands by the nest and waits for me to pick her up and put her back in. Now if I move from guarding her nest, she will come over immediately and demand (LOUDLY) to be put back in. So there I stand, looking stupid, stareing at eggs with big x's and o's on them. Once in a very great while there will be an extra egg in her nest....usually laid by someone who couldn't find a respectable place to lay her egg and things got urgent, so she risked Momma's wrath and squeezed into Momma's nesting site to lay her egg. Not many of my hens are even that brave, so many times I find eggs on the floor when Momma is setting on her babies.

You know when I get pecked most? Is when someone comes to visit and I want to catch a chick for the child to see and pet. That's when I get pecked. NONE of my hens like to have me touch their babies. And that is why my flock is A WILD BUNCH. But I dare a hawk to try and take one of those babies. I don't think Momma will give too hoots about the laws regarding harrassing or killing birds of prey. She'll peck it's eyes out in a heartbeat.

DH is building our new coop today at the new place. I'm so excited!!!! Our ducks FINALLY came we had one that didn't make it :( the other ones are doing good. Our little jimmy with the leg that's not extending is still going but is not growing well. The little guy that hatched out after him started out smaller and is now way bigger. My new incubator is AWSOME and I have no issues yet. Today is our last day to throw stuff in our dumpster at the old place. We are 85% moved. Just finished planning next years school year for my boys and ordering all their material. Now moving on to 3rd quarterly reports and testing. I've been feeling overwhelmed but starting to feel like things are getting done lol.
