DH is building our new coop today at the new place. I'm so excited!!!! Our ducks FINALLY came we had one that didn't make it

the other ones are doing good. Our little jimmy with the leg that's not extending is still going but is not growing well. The little guy that hatched out after him started out smaller and is now way bigger. My new incubator is AWSOME and I have no issues yet. Today is our last day to throw stuff in our dumpster at the old place. We are 85% moved. Just finished planning next years school year for my boys and ordering all their material. Now moving on to 3rd quarterly reports and testing. I've been feeling overwhelmed but starting to feel like things are getting done lol.

YOU were the person I wanted to come to my house when the water was flowing across the yard. It was a WONDERFUL lesson in fluid dynamics, earth science and just plain fun. Darn, I wish I had remembered who was home schooling when it was happening. I had a great time changing the flow of water, making places lower so the water WOULD flow and watching the ice dams build up, only to crush them before they caused the water to overflow and cause a flood. The whole time I was thinking, "who do I know that home schools...this would be a great science lesson". Darn. Too late now, but if it happens next year I will try and remember who home schools and contact you. It was a micro-river enviroment....something the kids could see years of how rivers flow and change and change the landscape in just a short afternoon. (And hands on...who can't get behind hand-on learning when homeschooling? I know my kids loved hands on learning as opposed to book learning)

I'm trying to introduce a hen into the flock... She's an awesome bird. The other three keep pecking and jumping at her. Also I should say she was someone's house pet and I don't think she realizes she's a bird.

Coop/Pen # 2 is complete!! Taking a break, haven't sat all morning. I was up at 8 trying to get things done today. Made a run to the feed store since I was almost out. Came home and got started on that coop that's been sitting in my kitchen since it was delivered. Got it all stained, I hate to put anything in it. LOL Letting it dry out a little more before I go throw some hay in it and move the chickens into it. I don't think I'm going to separate them yet into their breeding pens since the newbies aren't laying yet anyway, some of are still pretty small and could use the warmth at night from the others. So everyone will be housed in the bigger coop until the younger hens start laying. Which shouldn't be until May/June sometime. I think what I might do is move the younger ducks outside and give them that smaller coop for now so they're not stuck in the shed all alone. Think they'll be more cozy in that little house than in the openness of the shed.

Brooklyn, it is kind of hard to bring in a new animal to an existing bunch. Chickens, dogs, it's all about turf and position. You probably already know this, but for a couple of reasons it is good to keep the new and the old separate for a while. The super important is to prevent spreading any illness that could be brewing and could be encouraged by the stress of change. The other reason is to allow the animals to observe each other from a safe distance to get used to each others existence before they are expected to share. Good luck.

You should keep her separate for a week or so ....somewhere where they can all see her .( do you have a dog cage ?)
Then put her in with them at night ..when they are sleeping ..
She will probably always be on the bottom of the pecking order ..and get pecked some

These are coming out so pretty, glad more folks will get some, very healthy babies. Jeff will be glad, he had said he wants to share his eggs around. I  thought I had a huge buff one but its one of the La Bresse LOL . Now I see that the LaBresse have yellow skin not black   So we have hatched now five of the little Silkies and two LaBresse. more still working on it pippin away. I quickly grabbed some egg shells out its getting pretty messy in there. They just crack me up the little "cheerleaders" for whoever is gonna hatch next. So smart! 

We are excited with you. Looking forward to MORE reports on the hatching and seeing photos.

DH moved our first batch of chicks out to the upper barn today. We're getting ready for our next batch due next weekend. Tonight is going to be an early night after being into work at 2am. Everyone have a good night.

I also had a Tractor Supply sick chick come home with me Gramma. Today actually. They gave her to me for free to try to save, but I had to buy others in order to have her. They had a bin of mixed pullets so I got some of those and two partridge rocks. Unfortunately the little sick pullet died while I was out with Baking and Metella Well, at least I know I gave her a chance. And I'm 98% sure three of the pullets I got are dark brahmas, which would be nice because I do love brahmas. Such gentle giants.

Some times the chicks are too stressed and need to be quarantined. I've put them in a box with food and water closed up in a warm place. They may just need to get some sleep. Too they may not be getting to the feed and water when crowded with other bossy bootses.
