NY chicken lover!!!!

If you keep a few chickens and don't have a lot of cleanings you can use it for mulch around trees and shrubs, burn it in a Fire pit or bag it and through it out. I use it to fill in low areas of the back yard or in my compost. I have used it in my raised beds covered with bagged top soil or garden soil
I use deep litter method and only clean 1 - 2 times a yr. I don't usually have much trouble with smell. My chickens keep it stirred up. When I do anything with it, I dump it back into the chicken run (it's a large run) and they work through it again. Mulching trees and plants, does it ever burn the plants? Is there anything you don't add it to? Thanks. sue

Sorry about all the flooding for those of you that got too much water. Some around here were flooded also. We're just wet.

Please get a copy of "City Chicks" by P. Forman. It's a good book, with lots of information. Check your local library or on line.

Like all animals they are only as clean as you keep them. Coop cleanings can be used for more than a few things. Mixed with peat moss or top soil there should be little odor. I use Diatomaceous earth in my coops. Wet anything will smell, so the peat moss and top soil help it break down quickly. I do get these little flies where the cleanings get well if I don't cover it with something else. The chickens usually "rework" the coop cleanings. I don't usually dump them in high traffic areas where they're likely to remain wet.

I will definitely look into that book. We have raised beds (we're originally from California and I love Mexican food.. but tomatillos are extremely expensive here, so I grow and can my own)! I need to build a compost bin/area - I've heard that composted chicken manure is EXCELLENT for gardens!

We decided since our neighbors are not opposed, we live on an acre that backs up to the woods, and no one really will care or know.. we are getting the chickens. I re-placed the order with Meyer hatchery - we'll be getting 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Buff Orpingtons. Someone in our area was selling a coop, so we'll have that delivered to us soon, too. I am so surprised by the reactions I get from people about chickens! They are convinced that they are disease-carrying and "dirty." Certainly they poop, but ALL animals poop. And at least these animals give delicious eggs!
congrats ..i new there was away around what they were telling you at the town hall..good luck and enjoy..oh and see you at the feed store ..lol

You may choose to get it in writing. They may change their minds.

If your husband is handy, there are some nice, simple plans for compost tumbler out there - really speeds up composting!!

OMG...now that song is gonna be stuck in my head for the rest of my life.

My daughter was in "Annie" while in High School.  (They needed BIG orphans to lift Annie during one scene)  Because I was there at all the rehersals they talked me into being in charge of the orphans (some as young as 5) to make sure they hit their cues and marks.   There were 49 of them.  It was fabulous to view.  BUT if I NEVER EVER EVER see " Annie" again it will be too soon.  (I figured with all the rehearsals and actual production dates I saw the thing almost 75 times.  Which is about 70 times to many for my liking LOL)
sorry lol. I think by the time the baby's over he obsession I may not want to see it for a while ..... But it's her favorite right now ;)

I
Morning all.  Weather is making me stiff as a board this morning and I dont have time for that!  Switched the brats and monsters over to the broiler feed.  21 percent protein in it.  They have been burning through the chick feed like crazy so I went for the broiler.  At the rate they are growing, I think they need the higher protein. Keeping track to see how much they eat on this stuff.  Being heritage breed, they may require the higher protein.  I am thinking of giving some to my layers as well.  Mix it with their layer pellets to give them a boost even though they are out freeranging everyday for a couple of hours.  I think the girls need a little extra as some have been feather picking.
Grabbed the reds out of the coop yesterday and put them downstairs for their trip tomorrow.  Grooming silkies today after I get done with errands.  Have to clean up the carry kennels for the trip and throw the pens in the trunk.  Busy day today!

Rancher--how is dw?  I hope she is healing well and her pain is managable.  Give her my best.

Stony--I know you read from time to time.  Just wanted to say hi.

Desiree--New Paltz isnt that far from me and I lived there for quite a while.  Hope you enjoyed yourself there.

Hoping for nice weather tomorrow.  Everyone have a good day!
it took us probable an hour and a half to get to new paltz . I had a friend that went to collage there and she took me to the guilded otter and it's been my fav since. We were on our way to poquipsey ( I'm sorry I have no idea how to spell it lol) to see on of my husbands and mine favorite band. I do love new paltz tho :)

.

On a side note - I put the down payment out for my coop. Should be ready for the cicks next weekend =). This guy 15 minutes away from me will build it and deliver it. I saw two coops he build and they looked nice and sturdy. It is very expensive up worth it to have something solid (I think it gets far too cold here for the TSC coops but I could be wrong.
I am sooooo excited I hope it turns out nice
