its definitely that time of year, i see alot young foxes on the way to work, how did you kill it? someone ran over a possum right in front of my house, i wish i knew who ran over it so i could thank them...

yah, I swear FOR those critters .....

Sad but I'd do the same - they are so lovely - but they need a higher level of fear of humans than they have.

Wolves are great as they keep their distance, but coyotes and fox just slink in and around ....

i agree, i see more coyotes every year, they arent hunted enough to be afraid of man. all these new predator moms will be out hunting for baby food, so be vigilant chicken folks, especially if you have lots of vegetation around your yard, gives predators cover to stalk your chickens. a co worker just had all six of his new chickens killed and carried off, he cant find anything, so he set some traps, i told him he needed more fence protection around his coop

So worried about the hatching eggs I bought at the chickenstock last week. Yesterday's storm caused a 4 hour power outage and they got down to 81 degrees. I covered the incubator with a big fluffy towel to try and keep the heat in and hoped for the best. There was a tornado one town over and we only got rain. The huge hail and wind missed us, so we were lucky.

Has anyone else had hatching eggs survive a power outage? They were on day 5 of development.

Horsekeeper--they should be fine. Had that happen last month while I was hatching. Still had a good hatch. Keep in mind that hens will get up and leave the eggs for a while to eat, poop, dustbath. You are early enough that it shouldnt be a problem.

Sah--nice fox. One less thing to worry about. You going to save the pelt?

Got rain last night while I was at work. Nothing really nasty like other people had. I think the pecking order has been established in the brat/monsters coop as they were all out yesterday in the run and today as well. Havent seen any more beatings being handed out, Ive been giving the terrorists some of the broiler crumbles in the am when I let them out to boost their protein intake and hopefully egg production. Keeps them busy in their run cleaning it all up. Silkies are out freeranging this am since I have to work this pm. Sassy growled at me when I looked in on her. She is sitting on 7 eggs. She is too little to sit on any more than that. I looked in on Eowyn and said good morning but she ignored me. She gets very intense when she is brooding and has the perpetual thousand yard stare. I have come to the conclusion that waiting for eggs to hatch is like waiting for jello to set. You keep looking in on both and nothing is happening but when you ignore it for a while, all of a sudden its done. Still waiting on eggs to hatch.

Welcome to the newbies! How can we enable(i mean help) you?

Off to the pharm later. Im sure its going to be insane and if anybody thinks their doctor will be in after lunch on a holiday weekend, they are insane and need to be committed. I have to work all weekend and monday so please woop it up for me. I live vicariously through you guys!

My husband shot it with a 12 gauge. It was walking right towards him, didn't even see him. We are definitely saving the pelt. This wasn't the first time we have seen him here. If it wasn't for the chickens clucking I wouldn't have known he was there.
