NY chicken lover!!!!

Good morning all.

Well we moved the ducks to the big coop and I'm using the small coop as a sexlink ee/oe pen now since it has a run on it. It was not fun chasing ducks through the dark. Those brown buggers are a pain to catch even with the net. With the net I was worried about heads getting stuck in the netting. I hope they know where to go to tonight.

With my main rooster in the small coop/run, his son seems to be manning up a little bit.

Do you have any kind of run or fencing that you could corral them into prior to them going into the coop? I found this much easier with ducks. They should go in tonight on their own however keep in mind, ducks like to stay out later than chickens. Well mine do at least. So if all of your chickens are in and the ducks aren't, give them a little extra time to get to their coop on their own instead of assuming they're not getting it when it comes to lock up at night. I wait till dark now to go outside and lock up so I don't go out once for the chickens and then twice for the ducks.

Broodys - I hand feed them .
..I forgot to say I feed them a mush - Watered feed ( so I know they are hydrated ) with dots of sunflower seeds ) to tempt them to eat ..never fails

Peepers is the D'uccle on the top and the bottom is Rosita a Black Copper Maran. Peepers comes out everyday to eat and let the other girls lay their eggs in her nest. Rosita comes out at least once a day. I try to keep an eye on her to make sure that she eats and drinks. I was worring that she wasn't eating but I see her more out now. I keep telling them it is almost over.

Candled eggs under broodies last night, something I don't nomally do....the hens know if the egg is good or not....but I got more curious than usual given the hen on the Guinea eggs pecked a hole in one of them.

Results? (The envelope please)

Guinea eggs...FAR to dark to see through. No info available.

Chicken eggs...Very porous. Yuck. The 2 I could see through are developing and another one was definately a clear. (Threw that one away...after cracking it of course, cuz curious minds want to know)

Duck eggs....OMG....I didn't even get to candle all of them cuz I don't know exactly how many there are. BUT of the 10 I candled only ONE was not developing and I am pretty sure that that is one I threw in the nest when the first duck dissappeared.(It was far dirtier than the others cuz the first nest was on the ground in the barn, not the coop) (I kinda wanted her genetic material in my flock...not gonna happen)


and it's RAINING!!! I'm gonna go watch it water my garden for me. Those hoses are HEAVY.

We sat with the chicks the entire time they were outside, and made sure they didn't run off. they were a week old yesterday, and today one of them jumped on to the top of their brooder, which is over a foot tall. Needless to say we put the screen on earlier than expected to keep the ladies where they are supposed to be.

i think my wife ended up taking about 75 pictures, she loves photography and the ladies are quite photogenic. My daughter is in quite a few also, she adores them already. I can't wait to watch them grow so i can put them outside and see how they react with their environment even more.

Mine do too. What I do like about Ducks is they're easier to control as they all flock together rather than scatter like chickens.
