NY chicken lover!!!!

Well, my chickenstock eggs went into lockdown today. I have a bunch of ameraucanas, four naked necks, and two lavender orpingtons in there. I also have a batch of OEGB eggs too. Next week is ducks and turkeys!

I also have a chick that is injured. I think either it hatched out under my duck, who must have stolen eggs from Penny, or it was one of the cochin's chicks and got separated from her, but I haven't had a chance to count her chicks yet and it seems too young for that so I'm leaning towards the duck hatched it and kicked it out. It is torn open on both sides of its head and one eye is injured. This is the second chick this year I've found this way, and I think my goose is doing it. I think she picks them up right around the head and since her beak is serrated she cuts them right open. So now all the broodies are penned off in separate areas with chicken wire to keep the chicks safe. I don't know if she's trying to hurt them or just investigating, but I can't think of what else would be causing this.

Wanted to share a pic of the "Silkie chicks" that I hatched out back in March that ended up being Silkie/Polish crosses. They're so cute. I'm glad I kept them. They free range every day since their too small to keep in the fencing. They wander about in the yard and are pretty quick and can even fly. My husband calls them Hawk Bait but I'm not too worried about them. They stay well hidden in the woods and tall grass. They're pretty smart. And always together!

Welcome, Hugz! I'm in Mexico! Its nice to have more Oswego County folk here!
I was so tired last night I forgot to shut my coops! Luckily everyone is still accounted for! Sold 15 guinea keets and 11 mixed chicks yesterday. Now I have lots more brooder space

my 2 dozen eggs from chicken stock go into lock down today so that make more room in my incubator! Just need to get my hands on a couple dozen eggs to put in it

I'm crazy I know!!
What eggs did you get at the chickenstock?

How early can I do the water test to check the eggs to see if they might hatch. Do I have to wait till they eggs are due or overdue? Can I do them earlier? How early? My eggs are due to hatch in about 5 days? I'm trying to leave it up to my broodies, but they are first timers so I'm worried...and I'm impatient!

If your eggs are under broodies leave them be. Brooded eggs hatch when they hatch. 21 day is not a hard and fast rule. They will not all hatch at the same time just like incubated eggs. Even with an incubator eggs can hatch past the 21st day. I've had them hatch over a period of 4 days. Some even start a day early.

If you have candled them and they're good then I'd wait. How many are there? If a lot then you could take the first few chicks to a brooder and when she's done return them to her.

Some folks mess with a broody hen but she will most likely take care of things herself. Unless you see a problem just let her do what she's born to do.

I'm not sure what you mean by "water" test. I've never heard of such a thing except to see if an eggs is old.

I've done the water test with my very first broody's eggs because they were too dark to candle. Basically you get a bowl of water the same temp as the incubator, place the eggs gently in the water and when all is still, they wiggle. If they are not alive they won't wiggle obviously. But even still, I would leave the eggs under the broody even if they didn't move and it was before day 21. You just never know.

My 6 sizzle eggs have been wiggling since yesterday. They have 4 days left. That to me is enough to know they're still alive. No more candling here. Fingers crossed they hatch!
