How cool is that.

I made DH read it so he knew what I wanted to build next!

Wow - that's pretty impressive! Congrat's Pyxis!

Hi everyone!

As usual, I am hundreds of posts behind, and I don't see being able to catch up on them all, but I do hope everybody is doing well, chickens included!

Finally, after reading about it and dreading it, I have a brooding hen, possibly two.

My Columbian Rocks, "Ursa" and "Molly" seem to have decided it's time to be moms. Especially Ursa! It was worse last week, but seems to be getting better. They growl and puff up when I take their eggs (and anyone else's they've laid claim to), but never bite. I just gently, but firmly, remove them from the nest box. Once they're off, they go back out and join the others and seem OK. But it starts over again the next day. I'm not going to sweat it, because as long as I move them along, they begrudgingly accept that fate for the day and go about their business of eating and drinking.

Everyone's laying well and seems OK. The only weird thing was I came in to the coop one morning a few days ago to one nasty explosive looking streak of poop behind the roost. Do broodies have strange poop?

If anyone here is interested, I've decided to part with 3 of my 7 chicks. I have 2 LF Cochins that I purchased from the chickenstock, one is a smooth splash and the other is frizzled. Not sure if it's going to be Splash or very lightly colored splash because right now the feathers are all white. I also have a Blue Orpington chick to go with those two. (1/2 English 1/2 American) I'm asking $15 for all 3 if anyone here is interested. I just placed an ad on CL. I have to downsize a bit.

TOB--broody poop is the biggest, nastiest most foul smelling poop you will ever come across. Trust me, you will know it before you see it and will smell it before you see it! Even my silkie girls, who are little, leave the biggest calling card ever and I look at it and wonder how all of that vile smelling stuff came out of such a little hen! The large fowl hens make it look like a very large dog came through your yard.

Eggs are perculating in the bator. My last hatch of the year, I swear. I do have a list going so far of who is going up for sale and when. I hate having to make these decisions but it has to be done. I have to try to get everything sold before we go visit our girls in Ga. I dont want the chicken sitter to have any more work than necessary. The brats/monsters are out playing now and enjoying freerange time. They all came running when I stepped out on the deck to say hi. My heritage breed reds are starting to look like the pics of grownup reds. They are getting the shape and coloring. The cockeral is still standoffish and really doesnt bother anybody unless the other boys are really acting out. He then steps in and puts a stop to it. Will be interesting to see what hes like when he reaches jerk stage. The terrorists were miffed that they were locked in so I went out and gave them some mealworms. Of course I had to give everybody some meal worms as thats only fair. My broody silkie mommas had some put right next to them as they refuse to budge off those eggs. I estimate hatch time to be soon from what I observed when I candled.

I forgot that a group of crows is called a murder. A murder of crows and a gaggle of geese. The english language truly is a strange language.

Have a pleasant evening all.
