NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. Dh and I were up till midnight with a visitor. He was big (150-200 lbs) and black and dumb. Dogs in the neighborhood were going nuts so I told dh. He went out and looked the first time and saw nothing . The second time he caught eyes with the flashlight so he came back in and got his shotgun and went back out. Sure enough, there was a big bear in the woods just beyond my silkie coops. We yelled at him and then dh walked towards him yelling at him to get out of here. The bear woofed a lot and snapped his jaws together then climbed a pine tree. Continued to woof and snap. He was clearly scared. Went back inside and when I heard him climbing back down I told dh. He went back out and made the same approach again. Bear goes back up the tree instead of running away (dummy). Heard him come back down again about half an hour later. Dh went out again and the bear had left. Hopefully his experience was negative enough that he wont be by again for a while. He got no reward and was scared enough to climb a tree twice to get away from the threat. Hadnt seen him in a while. If you have never heard a bear woof and snap its jaws together, it is something to respect, thats for sure. I looked around the coops this morning to see if there were any prints but found none. Of course the cheeps were oblivious to the whole thing. Times like this are when I miss our dog as he was always the first to let us know when a bear was around. He would chase them off as well.

Another beautiful day today. I will be wasting it at work. I hope some of you get to enjoy it!

Oh my goodness! We occasionally have them traveling through our area around this time as well. So far, our property has been avoided, but my parents down the road get the same type of visitor!

ask your local law enforcement they may be able to help you relocate without harming the animal

This is what we ended up doing. We also cut a tree down at the end of the run and mounted a owl decoy my FIL had. I know it's not going to be 100% but hopefully it helps until we can do something more permanent.

Also that's just the run for the juve birds . We don't have the other run done yet. We have to wait until we can buy more fencing. DH made a little juve spot in the coop with a smaller door into the run.

but he also made a second door from the main area for now that we will stop using when the other fence is up.

Thought I would let them try. Last year my BR girl tried so hard, but the cards were stacked against her. I think this is the same one...But those three all look the same, but I promised her this year she could. And the youngest SS, Speckles has been just as diligent, spending several days on wooden eggs. What I saw Fern running around with yesterday was a developing embryo, so I will stand guard so that doesn't happen again. Fern may not be an asset to the flock. Speckles is using a broken square clay pot for a nest box. It has a privacy wall built in. Makes me feel better about it breaking.

Do you still want a duckling next week when they hatch?
yes! my lone girl would love that so much!

this ones really got a hold of that bottle .
our ducks are still hiding in the basement in my sons room .
He says he is going to tell Dad tomorrow ..we will see ...if he does ..
yes she is a bottle champion lol, she is the younger one by 3 days but caught on very quick lol

Catching up on posts, been so busy! Pharm, wow, a bear? Oh that's scary! Your DH is very brave.

Fredo is crowing a lot lately. Spoke with the neighbor today. They can faintly hear him and love his little high pitched voice. They are up early and said they enjoy the sound. Found out the back neighbors have chickens too. Looks like chickens are the new dogs in the neighborhood!

Fredo is getting more protective of the 2 hens. Oh I know I'm going to get a lot of backlash over this one. Well, DH gets this remote controlled helicopter. You can see where this is going. So he HAS to show it to Fredo. OK, truth is we really wanted to see how Fredo would react. So we put the copter outside of the coop, Fredo comes over to inspect it and it turns on.

He let out a growl like a Pitbull ready to attack.

So we took the helicopter toy away. Maybe we can use it to scare off predatory birds in the future if the need arises?

Beek A Poo, the black silkie traveled from the lower level of the coop to the upper level. She hangs out in one spot, doesn't come down to eat or drink since she's moved up there. I'm hand feeding her every day and moved containers of food and water up there for her. Is this a sign that she may be getting ready to lay an egg? That would be a miracle.
