NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi Boskelli,

Thank you for the nice compliment.

I'm a wildlife / bird freak, and I keep the camera with me most days, even during hum-drum outings like bringing my kids to school or heading to the grocery store. Some of my best sightings have been from the car and I'm always keeping an eye out.

I have a decent camera that I got for Christmas -- a SONY Alpha SLT 65. This is thanks to my hubby, who tolerates my hobby and my addiction for seeking out and "shooting" critters.

I've taken so many "epic fail" pictures, believe me.... but over the years there have been some photo's that I treasure and I started to catch on to what works (light is EVERYTHING!) My wish for each shot is to get an intimate portrait of whatever animal or bird I'm photographing at that moment.

TOB

You would like to stop down the road from us about 3/4 mile. We have American bald eagle nest that people keep taking pictures or trying to watch. I've been wanting to get a pic but don't think our cam can zoom in enough to make it worth it

Sad night tonight. I went to close up the chickens and something had killed and partially eaten my barred cochin bantam hen who had chicks. The chicks are nowhere to be seen and I'm sure she died trying to defend them. So tomorrow a trap is going out and it's going to be baited with chicken.

That sucks hope you catch what ever it was.

Well day 21 and chickes are hatching left and right. All the eggs are from the chicken stock. Cant wait for them to dry out and be moved so I can get some pics of them.

I haven't been on in nearly a week. I couldn't catch up on all the posts, but I did see a pic of a pretty cool stacked brooder. Sorry Pyxis about your cochin and babies.

Travis' birthday was Tuesday, zoo field trip for pre K was Friday, my cousin's wedding was yesterday up in Alex Bay, my family is coming over today, and Fiona's birthday is Monday. I didn't get home until 11:20pm and I had worked my normal 2am shift at work yesterday. Now I've got to clean my house, do dishes, and figure out what I'm going to cook today. I still have to birthday shop for Fiona too!

My birds have all been let out to free range together now. With everything so busy we've decided we're done with hatching. Our batch we set after chicken stock is due to hatch on Friday.

Hope everyone is doing great and welcome to the newbies!

I think there are eagle nests out this way, too...but I'm not sure that's what they are, and I'm not sure what road they're on (not originally from here, lol). I just know that I see them when we're driving from Penn Yan to Auburn/Syracuse.

Morning all. I was late getting outside to let everyone out this morning and boy did I hear about it! BAWK BAWK BAWK! Put the silkie chicks outside today in the wire cage so they at least get some outdoor time and fresh air. Candled the eggs under the broodys last night and pulled one that was questionable. The rotten egg smell still lingers. Girls werent happy I was messing with their eggs. Eowyn tried to rip my hand off. Looks like hatch could happen any time now. The eggs were all full. Bator is perking along nicely now that the window is open so that the room doesnt get too hot. Checked quite a few cheeps last night and I dont see any more mites. I hate cooties. I dusted everything again anyways including nest boxes. The brats/monsters coop got cleaned out, dusted and new shavings with more dust. They didnt have anything at all but I am taking no chances! Of course they all had to be underfoot as I was doing things in and around their coop. I almost stepped on a couple of them cause they wont move when you are busy doing stuff. Literally under your feet or right in front of you.

Pyxis--sorry to hear of your losses. I hope you trap whatever it was and send it off to never land, never to return again.

Jlaw--glad to hear you are having good hatches. I am on my last one!

Time to dig out my jam jars and get them prepped. Got to inventory my other jars so I know what I have for pickling and canning chicken. Have a great day everyone!

I have been seeing those birds too when I drive by Chautauqua Lake. I thought I must be seeing things because it was so unusual.

I've got one hatch I loaned to my school ready to come out this week. And another one going in at home today.
