NY chicken lover!!!!

Kinmera---fillers? not planning to hatch? real project birds??? You are a funny lady! We all told ourselves that! Ask Rancher, he knows!

I had no intentions of breeding these girls and still do not. I have 25ish orps growing up to replace them. I have no problems with turning birds into freezer fillers, esp if I'm going to be serious about breeding to sop. Which is the only reason my husband puts up with me hatching birds every three weeks from January to September.
What I was told that you have to hatch 100 chicks to get 10 to work with. With that in mind I've changed how things will be done around here in the future. Now if your orps are as nice as Jody's in PA you'll have some nice sized birds to fill the freezer.

I went out today and found a chick in the large hoop coop. I'm surprised at which hatched it since she was 1. not the original hen who started out with these eggs and B. not the first hen to go broody in the coop. The first hen has a bunch of eggs under her but yet to hatch a chick. I have pulled a couple of hers too.

I'm not sure it's God's will for me to downsize since everytime I get rid of two, four hatch out. I do have someone who will take all my eggs so if that works out I'll have money for feed.

What is it about having chickens that makes you want... more chickens? I feel like my 3 girlies (and lets hope they're all girlies) aren't nearly enough...

Well in my not so humble opinion. Seems to me there is plenty of food to go around, that folks don't have to go hungry if they're willing to A. have and take care of chickens and 2. Plant a garden.

Just so you know I love you. I have a recipe for Egg Plant meatballs, should any here be Veggie terrorists or Vegannies. Just let me know and I'll post it to the Home Stead thread. I also have one for Egg Plant preserves. Decent tasting if you like that sort of stuff. Serve it like you would apple sauce at lunch or dinner.

you should definitely head over to natureberry farms, they have a website, great people, you will definitely find some more chickens! welcome to BYC

Bite your tongue. There are plenty here with chicks that you should not have to buy from them. I haven't had to buy chicks from a hatchery since being here on BYC. Too I've been hatching plenty to give chicks away over the years.

Sorry, but I just like to do business with my friends first.

LOL! I've heard it called "chicken math" too. :) I'm a fan!

:) thank you! I was just thinking about making a trip out there one day soon. Or, if the local farmer's market I'm volunteering for can get them, I'd love to have them come out and vend for us some weekend! (Not for purely selfish reasons, I swear...)

Got up early this morning and opened the girls' cage out on the front porch, they all hopped out to run amok while I cleaned things out and refilled their feed and water. Silly girls. Sadly, I have so much to do today that they aren't going to get much (if any) outside time - but I'll make up for it tomorrow. Can't WAIT til I get my coop built ... hopefully in the next week or two.

Dogs are fed, cats are fed, 11 year old is off to his second-to-last day of school.. laundry and coffee time for this mama, before I have to run errands.

Really? This is what it's like at a C. A. A. (chicken addicted anonymous )

Can anyone tell me if there is something I can do, or if there is something wrong with my Silkie that is laying eggs covered in blood? When the first one was laid I thought ok, maybe it's normal cuz it's the first egg. Well everyone after that (about 5 or 6 now has been laid with this splash of blood on it.

I have never dealt with anything like this before. Her vent seems normal, not prolapsed or anything. Is she lacking something in her diet? Anything I can do to help her?

I would put her on a grass diet for 7 days ...no layer .  It is probably something internal .

Separate her someplace quiet & dark  And see if corrects itself

She's not even on layer and does free range all day in their run. They're still finishing out the bag the flock raiser. She's only a year old and just recently started laying.
