Would anyone be interested in hatching eggs? I know some are done hatching this year but I have no more room for eggs in my fridge. I actually just scrambled up a dozen this morning and fed it back to the birds. I have Orp eggs and Silkie eggs although my silkies are currently in withy sizzle roo. So the offspring could be smooth, frizzled or silkies. Or frizzled silkies ;-). I'm getting 3 eggs a day from my silkies but so far only two birds are fertile. If anyone is interested feel free to PM me.

Recent research is showing that Round-up is not 'safe'.  Mother Earth had a very interesting article on it recently.

It wouldn't surprise me. But I always question any research until I know who really paid for it. Research has a tendency to find what the money wants it to find.

The round up company even has a patten on soybeans they take part of the molecular of roundup and insert it in soybean so that the plant don't die when sprayed. Look at tomatoes they have scorpion DNA in them for bug resistance and corn when we cane to this country the ears only where about 2 inch now they up to 3 ft

Thanks, Rancher. 75% of the flock is fenced and everything is within 20 feet of the house. I asked my grandson to weedwhack what he can and I will be out in heavy clothes and gloves nipping off the bigger stuff to create a buffer. Next door is guarded by my daughter's horse who hates everything canine and chases them out of his paddock and her big lab. Looks like I may have to scrape up the money for some of that electric poultry fence.

I have found some turds today in the yard that do NOT look like chicken poop. To big to be a cat, so it may be the fox. I will be watching to see if anything is coming this way at night time. I'll sleep in the back room since I can hear the chickens easily enough.

Raccoon should be similiar in size to a cats scat. Can usually tell by the fact that theres plant matter in with it, as they are omnivores. Fox will typically have some hairs in it, or even bone fragments if they are eating mice or rats.

Oh Lord I think that one of the chicks has mites?! I see a bunch of little white bugs on Pudgy bu it's vent. Are they mites or is it lice? Can I wash them or dust them in DE to get rid of it? I haven't seen any on the other chicks or any of the hens that I have checked? I don't think that it will be an isolated thing will it? OH Lord. I'm glad that I just got a new thing of DE last week. See that is what I get for dumping out the ash and not refilling it right away. I'm going to need to clean out all the coops again huh?

Have any wood ash? You can dust her for several days in it then leave it out all the time so they can use it daily. I also redusted mine with wood ash after 10 days to catch any eggs that may have hatched. I've never had any more problems once I remembered to keep wood ash in their dusting bin. I mix it with some peat moss.

Broody report. The SS and BR each have one blonde chipmunk chick. The BO has two black with a little white chicks and two eggs still. I hope the moms aren't looking for resemblances in their chicks. Earl doesn't seem concerned at all. Due to security measures he has not had visiting privileges.

How does everyone do the wood ash thing? Do you get it from a woodstove or would the ashes from a charcoal grill work?

Rancher Hicks - Can you keep all the broody's together, or will they fight? I have zero experience with broody hens... I wouldn't know what to do if I were in your shoes. Keep us posted!

I have a lead on a few free white leghorn pullets - does anyone else have these? Are they decent layers? They're about a month older than my girls, so not sure how well they'll integrate. Not picking them up 'til after I get the coop finished next weekend, maybe that will help - no one will feel like the coop is "theirs".

Also, more and more worried that Waffles is a 'roo. :/ Can't have roo's here. My son is going to be heartbroken if we have to find a place for him. I promised him an "Easter Egg" chicken if we can't keep Waffles. I guess I'd better start looking for EE pullets, and hope that it helps with the sting of losing his chick.

Tomorrow, planting a mini rosebush I received as a housewarming gift, and transplanting some sage. Cleaning, and taking my pregnant calico up to the vet for a checkup.

I've had broody's before and some are nice and some are not.

I've had hens brood together. I've two marans hens who are together with 6 chicks. The two hens that I tried to put together don't live together and the marans hen is not nice.

The Sussex hatched out three last night, 1 lav and 2 black. One I think is a BR/Marans. I took her unhatched eggs and gave them to the EE that I've been fighting to break. She lost the one she had so I'll just keep taking chicks and giving them to another hen.

I need them to stop being broody. In the Marans/BR coop I can't use any of the eggs since I don't know who laid it and how long it's been under the hen. Once they're done with hatching a few chicks I'll just keep taking any eggs everyday.

I'm sure I'll have some EE pullets in these chicks. I won't have any Lavs but there are black with some red in them. How old is your son and is he willing to help clean a coop in trade?
