NY chicken lover!!!!

If my broodys are in the coop together they will brood and share, but there two I tried to put together were not cell mates. Too I think the Marans rooster is not as nice as the Del and I think he had something to do with their deaths. My Sussex is nice and last time I had three hens on one chick but the Sussex won. I can move her and check and she's fine.

the marans was in my face!! In fact she didn't even want to let me in the coop. She's come running and flog me. If she goes broody again I'll have to put her by herself and leave her.

TOB - is it October yet??????????

Sure it looks pretty in the picture but I'd rather not have it.

Raccoon should be similiar in size to a cats scat. Can usually tell by the fact that theres plant matter in with it, as they are omnivores. Fox will typically have some hairs in it, or even bone fragments if they are eating mice or rats.

I do have a broody and they leave big piles but this was rounded on both ends and I didn't look at it too closely. I shoveled it over the fence. This is similar and raccoon.

How does everyone do the wood ash thing? Do you get it from a woodstove or would the ashes from a charcoal grill work?
I heat with wood so I always have some. When I run low I burn branches and such in our outdoor fireplace. I do not know if ashes from charcoal would work. Plus I would be worried about whatever chemicals they added to it.

Have any wood ash? You can dust her for several days in it then leave it out all the time so they can use it daily. I also redusted mine with wood ash after 10 days to catch any eggs that may have hatched. I've never had any more problems once I remembered to keep wood ash in their dusting bin. I mix it with some peat moss.
That is what makes me so mad. I make sure that their bin is full, but I forgot to cover it the other night and it got wet so I had to dump itout and I haven't refilled it yet. The big girls all look fine right now. It is the chicks that I noticed that had the bugs on them. I have been getting my ash from my In laws. They heat with wood, but now that it is nice weather they don't have any to give me. I'll have to make my own.

In the mean time I'm putting some DE in the spots that they are dusting in. I haven't had the time today to get everything changed out with the little broody coops so I'm going to have to get it all cleaned and changed tomorrow. I've got some small litter pans that I used to use for water for the ducks that I'm going to make some dust baths for the chicks.

We've been busy the last couple of weeks building breeding/grow out pens. I'm almost done, I'll probably do one more.
From left to right, 6x8, 5x8 and 8x8. The 8x8 has a run on it and I'll probably build another run off of the 6x8. I still need a door for the 8x8.
