NY chicken lover!!!!

How does everyone do the wood ash thing? Do you get it from a woodstove or would the ashes from a charcoal grill work?

I sent my kids to the local state park with a bucket and scoops and they cleaned out all the fire pits!! Should of seen the funny stares! lol and of course my oldest daughter had a blast of telling her friends that she had someones ashes in her car when they would ask her why they were in there..;)
I think next time we need some were just gonna have our own little campfire and roast some smores..:)

Anyone interested in some ducks? I have a few that I'm putting up for sale/ trade...

2 ish yr Blue Indian Runner Drake. (Remington Tuff Lips) I'd like to find him a nice new home a lot sooner then later. I only have 1 older girl that can handle the big boys, he is little to randy for my little girls to handle. I'm going to be working with my Magpies so he needs to find a new home soon. (DH said I can't get any more magpies till he finds a new home)

2 Blue Runner ducks. (Meagan & Bell Pepper) The little girls are just a little over 18 weeks. Not in a big hurry to sell, but are for sale none the less.

Magpie Drake. (Gert) This little guy is 10ish weeks and is a nice little guy. A little to much black for my line, but that doesn't make him any less cute! Not in big hurry to sell him either and if not sold then may go in with the Pekin for pets. Happy if he went to a good home.

Day 2 of flock integration....so far so good, lol.

My three silkies and bantam sebright are still pretty unhappy at being "left behind." I wish I could integrate them into the main flock as well, but I just don't think it would go well.

Everybody else is jockeying for position in the flock. The chicks took roost on the top bar today, instead of the lower bar...and they all let themselves into the coop at night, unlike last night where I had to put them in the coop.

So far, no blood. We're doing good.

CHippie hatched one little chick ..a Yellow one ..I wonder if it is a girl ?
She has 2 more eggs I added later because I didnt think this one was going to hatch ..I forgot to write down when she went Broody
Pics Tomorrow ...I forgot my phone inside today
The timing was perfect ...
Her chick hatched so it had to be moved from the nesting box to the small cage
And
TT has officially released her baby Yappie ..she is pecking at it now
And now out of the little cage
Poor little thing ..it was screaming today for her she ignored it ...it is not sure who to hang with ..
It was roosting tonight in with the rest of the Teens ...( 4 months ones ) it got pecked & screeched .
So I moved its 1/2 sister next to it ...Tweety ..She was just fine with it ( she probably remembers their mom doing it to her too ! )
Yappie

Tweety - upfront my 1/2 Aussie

I am sorry for your loss. You will learn the difference between their alarms. Too it would be good to put up some type of fencing to slow preds down and keep the chickens in. Too you might like to wander around and let the preds know you're about. Get a man to "mark" around the place especially in areas that look like paths preds would take.

I've been clearing out brush and small trees in our woods. Also I've been "lollipoping" bigger trees so there is a clear view. Check for places foxes or coyotes would "den" up in. When I'm out back I sing. Letting anything that out there know I'm there.

Again I'm sorry for your loss.

I don't know about the rest of you but I have no problem with marking my own territory

Morning all. Dh was kind enough to get the ac in as the house was horribly hot when I got home last night. Thank goodness as the next few days are going to be just nasty. Have to run out this morning and get all my errands done before it gets really hot. Loaded up water and feed last night and will get the cheeps some melon for later today. At least I am off today so I can let them out and put out water bowls around the yard for them. Have to get out my rooster booster and add that to their water as well. Soaked my plants this morning. My tomato plants are loving this heat. They are finally doing some growing.

Ke5shde--Can I have your new setup? That is awesome!

Gramma--its always tough on the kids when mom kicks them out!

Sweetpea--glad the integration went well.

I will post a pic of my finished sweater when I get buttons on it. Off to deliver eggs, get feed and human food. Stay hydrated today folks. This heat and humidity is no joke.

So I've been up since 4am, couldn't sleep, too much on my mind. I have a coffee, read on my phone a little and decide to head outside to let everyone out since I've been sleeping in as of late and no one gets out until 9 or so. I head up to the coops/rabbit hutches and hear nothing but flies buzzing around. Tons and tons of flies and can't help but wonder why there are so many. I'm looking all over the ground and notice what seems to be a little black bird or what was left of it anyway, the wings, some feathers. And now I'm still tired, staring at it thinking what on earth would be able to kill a bird up here?!? We have no cats roaming around...and it's like at that very moment I looked up, glanced over to the hutch that ALL my chicks and 1 duckling were in and they were gone! All gone besides the 1 duckling which was lying there dead in the cage and one little black chick, I think it was my smooth sizzle half alive. My 2 frizzled sizzles - gone, 5 Orps - gone, 1 silkie - gone! All gone! Blood and guts all over the ground, I'm still in shock. This freakin raccoon just had his last meal. Tonight I'm sitting out there with the pellet gun DH just bought and taking that sucker down! I am sooooo PO'ed. What really makes no sense to me is if those chicks were getting attacked by this raccoon, why on earth did they come to the front of the cage?!? The whole 3 other sides of the cage are boarded. This thing stuck his paws in there and managed to grab each one out piece by piece! So ticked. Still in shock and just so ticked. DH woke up shortly after and went up there to help me clean everything up before the kids woke up. Just so upset.

I am so sorry you woke up to that. Raccoons are fierce b*stards when it comes to getting what they want. I've got paw prints all over my coop where they tried to get in during the night. Good luck with your hunt, and I'm sorry about all the babies.

I've had broody's before and some are nice and some are not.

I've had hens brood together. I've two marans hens who are together with 6 chicks. The two hens that I tried to put together don't live together and the marans hen is not nice.

The Sussex hatched out three last night, 1 lav and 2 black. One I think is a BR/Marans. I took her unhatched eggs and gave them to the EE that I've been fighting to break. She lost the one she had so I'll just keep taking chicks and giving them to another hen.

I need them to stop being broody. In the Marans/BR coop I can't use any of the eggs since I don't know who laid it and how long it's been under the hen. Once they're done with hatching a few chicks I'll just keep taking any eggs everyday.

I'm sure I'll have some EE pullets in these chicks. I won't have any Lavs but there are black with some red in them. How old is your son and is he willing to help clean a coop in trade?
Lukas is 11. I'm sure he'd be willing to do some hard work. He isn't neurotypical (tentative asperger's diagnosis) and generally needs to hear instructions several times and needs semi-frequent reminders to stay on task, however. But he's a good kid, and I think he'd try hard. Want a Light Brahma cross cockerel, by any chance? I worry about finding a place for him, too. I'll try to get good pics today and post them for some second opinions. My chicken sexing skills are slim to none.

:)

So sorry, Lynzi. My heart goes out to you. I lost 2 more hens yesterday in broad daylight. My best blue copper marans hen and a jersey giant. I saw the hens dust bathing around noon and then they were gone without a sign.
