NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all! Like walking into a sauna this morning when I went out to let the cheeps out. Going to be a rough day for people with health issues. Please stay in if you do and check on those elderly neighbors and such to make sure they are okay as well. Cheeps couldnt wait to get out and under the coops. They will be getting their frozen watermelon when I get home from work today. Ordered some stuff for them yesterday in hopes it will give them a boost through molting and jumpstart egg production. DD came by to get camping gear for the weekend and discovered my strawberry syrup. Pretty sure she only heisted one jar. She didnt see the 3 jars of chicken in there otherwise she would have grabbed those as well. Her nickname is weasel, for good reason. Like a weasel, she is into everything! Babies are doing well and growing. Cant take one out to cuddle without the other one peeping loudly. The two of them are bonded. The older chicks are getting their feathers in and are rambunctions. Giving serious thought to grabbing those roosters from my friend on sunday and processing them. If they are at a good weight, then I will go ahead and do my roos I have here that are the same age. Have to get my canning jars ready.

Off to the pharm today. Take care and be careful and mindful of the high heat and humidity.

Great idea. I hate using charcoal for anything except when cooking with my dutch oven. The last few years I have been searching for natural methods for most everything. I can always find tree limbs to burn :)

It was over 90 yesterday with a heat index of 100 here. Thank goodness for a strong wind/breeze......I spent the day moving the brush pile & cutting wood. My chicks got frozen watermelon as well to help them through the heat. They all found the coolest spots they could when the sun was high. And my chicks zoom around like little torpedoes. We have never had chicks before so since I needed to take lots of breaks yesterday I was able to get some chicken therapy since it was near them I was working

They have their own web page. If you google it you'll find all the information you need. Usually there is a cutting thing where you can pay to cut your own bunch of lavender but this year there won't be due to weather problems.

there are crafters and artists and stuff like that. The first year I went I bought some note cards with chickens on them and gave the artist my Business care and she asked permission to use my Nick in her artwork.

It's a good time if you don't hurry, but take time to enjoy yourself.

Did you go to the one in Skaneatles or Red Creek??

So I've been up since 4am, couldn't sleep, too much on my mind. I have a coffee, read on my phone a little and decide to head outside to let everyone out since I've been sleeping in as of late and no one gets out until 9 or so. I head up to the coops/rabbit hutches and hear nothing but flies buzzing around. Tons and tons of flies and can't help but wonder why there are so many. I'm looking all over the ground and notice what seems to be a little black bird or what was left of it anyway, the wings, some feathers. And now I'm still tired, staring at it thinking what on earth would be able to kill a bird up here?!? We have no cats roaming around...and it's like at that very moment I looked up, glanced over to the hutch that ALL my chicks and 1 duckling were in and they were gone! All gone besides the 1 duckling which was lying there dead in the cage and one little black chick, I think it was my smooth sizzle half alive. My 2 frizzled sizzles - gone, 5 Orps - gone, 1 silkie - gone! All gone! Blood and guts all over the ground, I'm still in shock. This freakin raccoon just had his last meal. Tonight I'm sitting out there with the pellet gun DH just bought and taking that sucker down! I am sooooo PO'ed. What really makes no sense to me is if those chicks were getting attacked by this raccoon, why on earth did they come to the front of the cage?!? The whole 3 other sides of the cage are boarded. This thing stuck his paws in there and managed to grab each one out piece by piece! So ticked. Still in shock and just so ticked. DH woke up shortly after and went up there to help me clean everything up before the kids woke up. Just so upset.
I'm so sorry. We are battling with raccoons also. I have a trap but it's mighty small so today I'm off to buy another. The first time I saw one coon, last night there were 3. DH is a city boy too and he just poo poo's how crafty coon are. Today I'm also adding hardware cloth to my list as Pester the bunny has chicken wire on part of his coop. I don't want to find that he's been pulled through. Makes me sick.

Besides the coon, I'm not sleeping as my son and his family, (2-4yr old and a 6yr old) leave for Myrtle Beach on Friday. I just knew that the storm would turn into something stronger. I hope it stays east.

The only one I know is in Skaneatles. I've not heard of anything in Red Creek.

I too have to put up fencing to keep the chickens in the yard. They go into the woods and I might take the fencing through there a couple of feet. They like the shade in this heat.

For those with hutches you might consider a "double roomed hutch." One that will allow you to keep the chicks/bunnies in the back partition and lock them up at night and open it in the day time.

This is how my large hoop coop is set up. I shut the front part that is completely hardware cloth and then let them out during the day into the run that is poultry wire. My hope is that even if something gets through the poultry wire they won't get past the hardware cloth. Of course all the coops are closed at night and the hoop without runs have hardware cloth front and back.

I need advice on what rooster I should order. I'm getting a mixed flock ( 15 ) blue laced wyandotte, buff Orpington, speckled Sussex and Dominique hens. I know I will probably get a male out of my order but feel I should order a male. What will be the best kind???
