NY chicken lover!!!!

Luv maybe try a splint that encompasses its foot as well to prevent it from twisting. I'd leave it on for a few weeks if necessary.

Gorilla duct tape holds up,great on a hens foot. I used it last year when wrapping a hens foot who had bumblefoot.

From my little experience, putting vaseline on a chick means you end up with a chick with woodchips stuck on it instead. Most chicks won't get pasty butt so it is easier to just treat the ones that do. You only have to clean them a couple of times and it is over with.

Luv, I remember seeing a photo of a chick with their foot in a little boot for a few days. It kind of looked like a clown shoe made out of thin card board or something...it also was like a ducks foot, but then the foot and leg strengthened and was ok. I had that little chick just a couple of weeks ago who was attacked by the other moms and it has healed, and moves well. I wouldn't pull on its leg if it hurts it.

Good luck, they are quite amazing at healing.

I saw some pictures like that, but they seemed like they were for foot issues. This is something with the leg or the hip. I'm trying not to mess with it to much especially when it hurts the little thing. I was stretching it's leg, but it isn't helping so I stopped. I did put it in a wrapped towel for and hour while I was watching some TV. I sat it on my chest and talked to it and petted it's head. It's legs hung straight and I think that it was happy and comfortable. I think that it was only a few minutes and it snuggled in took a deep breath and went to sleep. It only woke up when I coughed. It was too cute. I think that I will keep putting it in the sling/towel. I'm going to try to make one that I can put it in when I can't hold it. I brought in the other chick and it snuggled under my cupped hand and went to sleep too. Then it snuggled under my chin when I was on the hone with DH. I got a little nervous when the cat came and sat on my lap too, but he didn't really notice them. As soon as I put then back in the brooder they both went and started to eat. I want to give the little chick that could as much time as it needs, but I don't want to make it suffer either. I put the band aid hobble back on and it seemed better so I'm going to keep them on for a while longer and hopefully it'll straighten out.

Part of me wonders why I'm putting so much effort into this chick. I guess that it may be because it was from my first hatch in my home made incubator and if it doesn't make it I'll feel like I failed. Yes I know...you have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet... Or maybe because I said that what ever hatched would be my kids "pet" chickens however if it is a roo I don't know that I'm going to do. It isn't anything that I would use in a breeding program and being a sizzle there isn't that much meat on it, so all I can do on that front is hope that it is a girl, but as I was petting it I can feel a comb on it where I can't on the other chick. The other part of me says just to cull it and get it over with...I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with it, but if the time comes, I'll find a way. ugh...

Morning all. Another brutal day today. This heat isnt helping my laying hens. Only 7 eggs yesterday. My poor juve silkies were panting away. I dipped their feet in cool water to help cool them off. Had to trim out legolas butt as it was all plugged up with poop. Silkie butts are notorious for being messy if you miss trimming them up. Inspected him and the girls carefully as this weather is condusive to fly blight if one doesnt pay attention. Found just a few mites on one of the girls so everyone got sprayed. Hauled lots of water and handed out frozen watermelon in the afternoon. I bought them another watermelon when I went food shopping and its cut up and frozen, ready for today. Unfortunately I have to work today. My reds seem to be handling this heat the best. Not much fazes them really. Clyde is turning into a real nice roo. He doesnt fuss much when I touch him. No looks from him either. Too hot to process the two I was going to yesterday.

While cooling my silkies, I noticed that one of the blacks is a roo. Waddle gave it away. Anyone want an 8 week old black boy? He carries the blue gene.

Chicks dont really need stuff on their butts to prevent pasty butt. Give them some vita pro b in their water or some good probiotic yogurt and there shouldnt be any problems. Good gut bacteria is what prevents pasty butt. Since I started using vita pro b in the water from the start, none of my chicks that I hatched out this year had pasty butt. I use it in the water of all my coops in this hot weather. Gives everyone an extra boost in this heat.

Luv--no harm in continuing to try to help your chick. You will know if and when you need to cull in the best interest of the animal. Its always hard to make that decision but its worse to see them in distress or pain. I hope the little scrapper makes a recovery.

Jlaw--hope your kids did well at the show. I have thought about it from time to time but decided its not for me. I just enjoy my silkies as they are. Yes, real heritage rir do get very dark. Color standards call for mahogany. Yes, they do get big. Mine are young yet but some of the girls have that nice dark coloring. Clyde is still too young yet to have that coloring. I expect him to achieve that around 9 months old or so and top the scales between 10 and 11 pounds or more. There is a definate difference between the generic reds and heritage reds. I find that my hatchery reds are more aggressive and bullys and meaner than my heritage breed reds. The heritage reds have been very calm, laid back and docile. They are always being bullied by the hatchery reds.

Lynzi--you find a place yet?

Ke5shde--how did the rest of your hatch go?

Off to the pharm today. Not looking forward to it as inventory is tomorrow. Stay cool everyone.

I really appreciate all the advice. I was so worried about pasty butt and none of my chicks have it. Still checking up on them a lot to make sure they're OK, but they all have clean hind ends and are pooping like crazy. Haha. I put a probiotic powder and sav-a-chick in their water yesterday so they drank that. Now just plain water. They seem healthy and happy enough!

Just posting pictures of my babies. Because they're so cute.

Buff Orpington #1: "Buffy"

Buff Orpington #2: This may be Sherlock - my older son likes the name but isn't sure if he wants a BO or one of the barred rocks.

Barred Rock #1: Unnamed so far. She will probably be Letty.

Our "mystery chick" - the Meyer meal maker. Everyone thinks she's a black Australorp. We are thinking of naming her Sheila.

Barred Rock #2. Daphne

Posted these to CL for free. I will be careful but they've got to go.

I believe it to be a roos. Yes his father is Shorty. There are two others with very short butts. If you'd like to come and have a look you're welcome to.

Shorty has been dancing with Cotton Bud my Del/frzi cross. I've not hatched any of their eggs since I've to many chicks now.

Out of all that have hatched, I'm keeping only the Columbian Rocks, Delawares and an EE. that I hope is a pullet.

There is another group coming up of marans and ee's.

I have three lavender chicks, not sure what they are sexwise other than EE's. Can't say they're from Shorty though. He's on the bottom of the totem pole. Big Bad John chases him.
