Morning Everyone!
On the chickens, I'm unsure yet if he'll allow us to have them. This guy is reeeeeeally nervous to be renting his home again. His last tenant stole a bunch of stuff from him and left holes everywhere in his walls. He's been working on it the last few weeks to get it ready for us. So the last thing I want to do is bring up chickens! He also has yet to meet us, we've been working with his realtor this whole time. Once he meets us I think his mind will be at ease. My landlord just wrote us an awesome letter of reference last night too! He couldn't believe how well the house was kept up when he was there yesterday doing an open house. I also have to contact the town/lake community today and see if THEY even allow chickens here. So I won't be asking the new landlord if the town doesn't even allow it. The only rules DH and I found were that they weren't allowed for commercial use, which I wouldn't be selling eggs or anything like that. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can bring my small flock of 6 to have back as our pets/hobby.

Lynzi77 - when / if you get to that point - remember to stress how SMALL yours are - as most people will think of RIR or other big fowl and that may make a difference in the yes or now answer from a landlord.

I wish I could get a garden going as well as I get the chickens going ! All my chickies doing well, and even the integrated adults all settle within a day and I have one harmonious flock. Now what the heck is happening to my garden ?!!! Do others really spend hours each day weeding ? Where do they get the time ? I can afford 5 minutes a day -and I suppose it is obvious ... since I have to push through the weeds to check on my squash. ha ha

Nope! Right there with you.........never enough hours in the day!! I took 2 days vacation & spent it weeding

Finally caught up!!! The girls and I do 'bug check' most nights' - but they don't help with the weeding.....

Right! I actually just emailed one of the directors of this lake community and stressed just that! Lol "we have a small quiet flock of 6 birds that are contained in 100ft of temporary fencing which I do not even use all 100ft of because they are so small and more prone to predator attacks" once I hear back from the board THEN I'll bring it up to the landlord upon meeting him or there after.

About 3 years ago the county legislature cut all funding to at least 4H and maybe even cooperative extension -- I can't remember exactly. In NYS any funding from the state government is a match of what the county provides - so they lost ALL funding from both county and state levels. The only way the program kept going at all was because they raised the price to $50.00 per child. They also started a type of fund for donations from people to help keep 4-H running in the county. They do have a scholarship program for families who struggle to meet that cost.

Yes its pricy - but the next county over is probably going that way too as they have a new director who audited the books and found out that the 4H program there is actually several thousands of dollars in the hole due to poor book keeping on the part of multiple parties.

Well now, I once bought some horse manure from a young man in Red Field. (106mi. round trip) So if a kid has a mind to join, it might be an easy way to get the money.

They could.............bag and sell manure of any kind, hatch a bunch of chicks to sell, sell rabbits or eggs, firewood, chop wood, mow lawns, pull weeds, shovel snow, clean coops. There are lots of ways to earn the money if they really want to be in 4H. Today's kids have too much handed to them. IMHO.

I recently GAVE away chickens. I was a little miffed that no one was willing to trade horse manure. Good garden o' peas! Not even one bag of horse manure? I really got to harden up and just cull them out right. One person actually said "I'll take them bring them to me".

FYI I have an ad for sale 8 weeks & older forum for light Sussex sexed chicks. These are my most prolific birds. Can't get them to stop layinng....

You need to do what I did. Start small with raised beds and add on each year. Many things can be used for raised bed sides and much of it can be found free on CL. I've seen cement blocks on there, landscape bricks and used bricks. Those "blue" tubs can be cut in half. Just use your imagination. Too there is no digging. Just lay down a bed of old newspapers and set your bed on top and fill it in with whatever. Straw, hay, coop cleanings and then pour a bad of soil on top and plant. Before you know it, one bed becomes two and two becomes three, etc. etc.

Well I won't argue with that but if you need broody mommas they're good for that and you should plan on it each year. At least my girl is and she'll take addons too. She has 9 of various ages.

If they're all as large as she is, I'd consider keeping more.

I moved to Dutchess County four years ago from Long Island. It was quite the change, for the better for me, but I was so worried about the children. They have all settled in and out of the four of them, 2 say they would never move back. The other two are ok here but miss their friends. I understand how you feel... bittersweet is the right word. Make sure you take the time to have a glass of wine at night.. and breathe!

I used to live in Dutchess County! I haven't been back home in many years, but want to go back someday soon, going to try next summer when the kids are a little bigger. I still have an Uncle and his family down there. I did love it down there. LOTS of horse farms.
