More like 3 weeks! Lol they're outta here! I can't stand the dust and the smell! Pew! I'm hoping to do some research when I get to CT, visit with the folks who offered to let me use some of their "land" to house my chickens and if I can find someone trust worthy enough, I'll be back up here to get them! DH was telling me last night that if we buy this house in 2 years (the owner might be willing to let it go then) he's buy us some land somewhere where we could build a barn and I could have my stable I've always wanted. I told him I'd rather buy a house with some acreage and be able to do whatever I want than to have to drive to my animals everyday. He just really likes this house and the fact that it's on a lake. So I guess we'll see what happens.

I'm not registered as a farm, though the paperwork I filed says I don't have to be.

I don't sell a lot of eggs, but I am trying to build a Hobby Farm to some degree. Which market do you go too? I hit the Regional Farmers Market here often.

When I was younger the slaughter house was right next door. It was not unusual to see live animals at the market.

I wish more folks would restore their barns instead of tearing them down.

DW is Polish and we buy Babka. She doesn't like the raisins. I do and eat the whole loaf myself. She also makes Kapusta, which I loathe. Our Christmas even dinner is the tradition of her family. I do like Perogis the potato not the Saurkruat.

I found this site: http://easteuropeanfood.about.com/ it's got some good recipes. I like the potato pierogi too. I'm not crazy about the kapusta (sour kraut) ones either. We often have the babka without raisins but some make it with raisins. A plain babka with egg wash top is very good too. We make the kielbasa borscht with mushroom at Christmas and do the kielbasa borscht with hard boiled eggs at Easter. My Aunt used to make Chrusciki, also called Angel Wings, and they take a lot of eggs to make. They are so good with powdered sugar. Polish pastries are very tasty.

I'm glad I am not breeding for anything in particular ! Just healthy birds (#1) and then egg color after that for a variety of colors. Also, for some strange reason I really dislike yellow legs -so I won't use any hens with yellow legs. :)

If I had to fuss to get copper out - or other such items (which I totally RESPECT) I would have more birds coming up and coming along than I could handle.

My wife has to send Yellow beans down to TX because my daughter can't get them there. Apparently they haves saurkruat for it by not the yellow beans to make the Kapusta.
I used to eat a small amount at Christmas out of respect for my in-laws. Since they're gone I don't eat it anymore.

Which breeds died, do you know?
Remember you have local options too. By spring, I'll not only have the white and partridge rocks, l'll have BBWS orpingtons, and if I'm lucky some marans I got as part of an egg swap. I plan on putting the maran Roos in with my layers to darken up the eggs over time. Eventually my laying flock will be a barnyard mix of my breeding culls
I lost two speckled Sussex, a golden laced wyandotte and a yellow chick... It could have been a male/female Buff Orpington or the free one they sent. What are BBWS Orpington??

And it also appears I have a number of lavender.... Pretty but I'm not breeding for it so will be interesting to see what colors come out next spring.
I'm going to be breed shopping in Mumford and hopefully Bath. Need more quality stock Sumatras, orpingtons, and rocks
