NY chicken lover!!!!

How are everyone's chicks growing out? I ask because I am in an unusual spot with development.

I have been raising Giants for the last 4 years, and their development each year is consistent up to this year. Normally I start getting eggs at 6-7 months, and the boys start filling out around the same time, adding some muscle. I am at a little over 5 months, the boys seem larger, Full combs, and I have been getting eggs for over a week already. Does anyone have any ideas. I have not introduced any new genetics since 2012, and I am using the same feed.

Also, Next week I should be NPIP. Good or Bad, I don't know, but I figured I might as well get it done.

Let me be sure I understand you correctly. What you're saying is that your birds are maturing earlier than previously? If so. It's my understanding that Giants Black were bred for size but unfortunately didn't mature faster than previous breeds making them not cost effective for commercial use.

I also understand that White were smaller than the blacks and blue also. I'm not sure if blues are smaller than the whites.

Perhaps some research into the breed might yield an explanation. Perhaps earlier is more in keeping with the Heritage lineage. Is there a SOP? for Giants. An SOP might give you something to shoot for.

I had thought to get into them but didn't think I'd have the room. I figured I could fit more in my coop.

Just got done moving my rabbit hutch to the deck. Not sure if I mentioned I did end up bring my two lionhead rabbits with me on this move. I left my hutches in the yard for my friend to take the day we moved out she gave me her carriers to transport them down here and keep them in until I my hutch came that Saturday. I wanted to be careful with where I placed the hutch in the yard because after contacting the board of this community and getting a response copy and pasted into an email from the rules and regulations of "the Lake" I knew if anyone ever caught wind that I had them I'd be asked to get rid of them or bring them inside. So outside my back deck are steps centered in the middle and I tucked the hutch to the left of them just under the over hang of the deck. Well...yesterday I was at the bus stop and met another mother there who has a daughter that goes to school with my two. I was telling her about where we came from, what we were raising back in Tully, etc etc. She got so excited because she wants to raise too! So like us, she only wants to live here a year as well because she wants her own property so she can raise chickens. I told her if I find some land to rent I'd help her get started and she can share it with me

. Anyway, I told her how the only things I had left that I actually brought with me (besides household cat and dog) were my two bunnies. She was shocked and was like "Wait, you have them here? At your house? Where?" So I told her how they are "stashed" under my deck in their new hutch that I just bought for them. Well get this one. Her landlord is on the board and when she moved in here her daughter had a rabbit and her landlord told her she'd have to rehome it or not move it. He did not allow pets whatsoever so she couldn't even bring it inside and be an indoor bunny. Isnt that crazy?!?! So she told me if I had plans originally to keep them on the deck then to get them up on the deck. So I did. Just so bogus how strict they are here. I can't wait to get outta here next year and have a house of own. I wish we had more time when this all happened but we just didn't. It sux. So if anyone DOES find out I have them they'll be moved to the basement or garage. Which sux cuz it's so dark in there. They need fresh air. So it sounds like I've found a new friend who at the same level of feelings about this place as I am. just thought I'd share that little crazy story with you all since I have chicken stories to share.

What's to be fed up about?

I figured he's started a blog and there is money in having a blog if you can get sponsors. AND develop a following. No one follows me. Well no one but my chickens and they don't spend money, though my wallet has been missing for a while.

I do remember stony mentioning this. You don't annoy us well at least me you make me laugh . . . a lot.

Meeting with someone next week when they return from vacation to see if it's a good fit for my chickens. He lives right in Woodstock, maybe a 10-15 min drive from me. Raises chickens that free range all day and says he has plenty of space and storage for my birds. Fingers crossed this is a good match. All he would want in return is help with his chickens if they were to ever go away for a weekend or vacation or whatnot. I have no problem doing that at all! Wish me luck! I miss my birds!!!
Good Luck!!! Sounds good.

Gramma I meant doesn't she tell the other birds to keep away from her? My two broodies do.

My birds are doing well I seems my buckeyes polish and americuanas are very slow growing and the muscovy ducks are a little faster but still slow growning. We just had some chicks hatch they are leghorn mixes so they should grow bit faster.

Historically, and with a lot of giant breeders, they don't what them to mature until later (slows growth) so having birds lay at 5 months is good for eggs, but bad for growth. A lot of Giant breeders say their birds do not lay until 9-11 months old.
