NY chicken lover!!!!

You do realize some of us are ignorant right? Because I'm reading this and I'm going,
hu.gif
ON VERY NEAR? On or Very near Niagara Falls ? Doesn't she know if she lives ON or Near the falls. I mean if she lived ON the falls she'd be all wet, right?
hu.gif

Then I realize it's ONTARIO. As in Ontario, Canada, right?
th.gif
Did I mention I was ignorant?

Because I was telling a neo hippy a while ago that we Americans don't think of Canada as a foreign country, which it is.

Canadians come down to the Destiny mall all the time and they look just like everyone else.
gig.gif
Isn't that weird?
lol.png
I mean we can tell the folks from Holland cuz they wear those wooden shoes, but Canadians look just like us Americans.
lol.png

My point being, I personally don't care where you live you're welcome here anytime. Except as previously mentioned DW and I need a vacation when her cancer treatments are over, so don't be surprised if we show up on your doorstep.

You'll know it's us cuz one of us has no hair.

I'm old and bound to say weird things, but I love ya.

Rancher
Sorry about that! I am half Canadian, half American, though.

I forgot what I came here for.

Do those " Bat houses" really work? What happens to the bats come winter time? If I hung some on the back of my chickens coop would the poop make my chickens sick?

See now this is why we need Stony. He knows everything.

I want to build a couple around the house with scrap wood to see if they help with the mosquitoes that the hens can't get
The other thing I came in for was to talk about the price of Egg cartons. OOMMGG!!

I got the ad for one place and their sale price is as much as TSC. What's up with that?

Fact is I ordered from them a while ago and will say, don't order those "break apart" cartons, cuz they're no good. They're seconds of course but just come apart.

Folks wonder why they pay so much for eggs at the market. 50 cents is just for the carton!!
Have you tried asking friends or family to save them for you? Once in awhile I post it on FB & tend to get enough for months to use. The people who buy them from me also return them.

Sooooo.... went to the fair yesterday. Kinda disappointed in the poultry exhibition. Some of the birds looked ill/stressed. Not many at the top of their form I think. Also, the layout had been changed and many birds had no label /wrong label on their cage or section. I'm not knowledgeable about all breeds and there were some I would have liked to know breed/info. etc. - the Wayne Co. fair was better organized although much, much smaller.
Anyhoow - the highlight of the fair for me was to meet and listen to Bells and Motley! I love renaissance/Celtic music. It was a magical performance.

You people with kids - how do you afford rides on the Midway for the little ones????
th.gif
I found the prices steep - if you took 3 kids it would work out around $150 - without food. glad I only have chickens as kids!!

You call that a little story? The story of my first marriage was shorter! AND crazier!

That is a story that I'd like to hear someday

I have friends and family save them for me. I have a trash bag in the garage filled with them. I have made a wrapper that I wrap around the carton with my farm name and some information. I used to buy the cartons, but I don't charge my family so I was losing money that way...so now I used the ones that everyone gives me.

I have to work at the fair again tomorrow. When the Poultry Building Supervisor comes for breakfast I will tell him your suggestion about labeling the cages better. I was noticing that too. While we took the kids through today I had a family following us around asking me questions about what they were seeing. It was funny being a chicken tour guide...I offered to help him out the other day. He said that he could use the help that day cause some of the people didn't show. I wish that I hadn't had to leave right after work or I would have helped out. Maybe next year! I saw a few chickens that didn't look great, but there were a lot of chickens that were there that I think were only there cause they were for sale. I don't think that I would EVER want to buy one from there. I did see a few that looked more like production birds and not good quality show birds...There was one that I felt bad for, (I took a pic) It had pulled out a lot of feathers.

That is mostly feathers and jut a little shavings...

On affording the fair...not sure how we are going to do it in the next few years. We buy our tickets before the fair so that we can save some money. Our kids are still pretty young so that we don't buy the all day ride bands. We limited the kids to 3 rides each and were able to buy enough tickets for that for $25 total. When they get older it will be harder...I saw a huge family buying 7 bands at $25 each...between that and food to feed them all, they needed to take out a small loan!
th.gif
..All day bands are $25 week day and $30 on the weekends, If you bought them pre-fair they were $20..and they had a mega type band. I think they were $70 pre fair sale only..They are for unlimited ride all day every day of the fair...

...On Labor day admission is only $1.00 and each ride only cost $1.00 That is the day to go and save money!

Egg cartons can be expensive, for sure....that's why I don't buy them, I ask folks to save them for me and I give a 50 cent discount on eggs for carton return (Most folks bring me many cartons, not just the one for the 50 cents off) I never run out of cartons. A couple of days ago, someone stopped out front and left me 2 grocery bags of egg cartons under my "egg" sign. LOL Didn't even get to thank them, but took note of the car, in case they ever stop to buy eggs.

I did price my eggs 50 cents higher than I wanted for them, however, so I am still getting the 2 bucks I feel I deserve even with the "discount" and more if someone forgets their carton. And if they forget their carton, they pay the full $2.50 for the dozen. (Except one guy who stops the next day and consistantly puts the cartons in my mailbox on his way to work. LOL Never fails, he stops for eggs the day BEFORE he puts the cartons in the car and he always gives me 2 to 4 cartons for his 50 cent discount)

Anyone sell Duck eggs? I priced my Duck eggs at $2.50 a HALF DOZEN. Is that a good price? Too high? Too low? Someone told me that $1 an egg for duck eggs is the going rate, but I can't remember who told me so I am not sure how reliable the info is.

I try to be funny, but sometimes miss the mark. Don't mind me. With all this going on with DW I really NEED a vacation and so does she. I hope the airline tickets aren't to expensive when this is over.

I did some research here on BYC about bats and bat houses but I'm still not sure those they sell help much. I got an ad for them on sale for $29.99 and thought perhaps I'd put one up on the back side of the chickens coop. I've only seen 2 flying around at night.

Some say they're not sure they do much for the mosquitos. Well I mean much in eating them not actually helping mosquitos. Now that would be weird wouldn't it? Putting up bat houses so bats could help mosquitos.

Love ya,

Rancher

I wish I was around for the picnic but my truck had just got fixed and I couldn't afford the drive.

Gramma

that is awesome you saw that show! Jone Jet is def a rock n roll goddess.

When I saw she was playing I knew I had to go that day ....we were way back .. But they had her on camera so you could see her real good no matter where you were .
I am pretty sure I cut Journeys Buses separate from each other . they had a police escort & 2 buses .
One bus was way back when I was in the intersection ..to go to the fair ..Im like Im not waiting for that bus to catch up ..
Then I realized they were together ...oh well he found his way the Grandstand anyway ..
