Well we put 4 eggs in the incubator after Ti Ti left the nest ..one hatched 1st ...It was so lonely it screamed when ever I left the room .

So I tried this ...it wasnt really comfortable for either of us ..the chick did its own wing lock ..
Then I got the idea of a butt pack ..put it in ...zipped it most of the way ..and it could go with me everywhere .
It even went in the bathroom with me when I took a shower ...
Of course it had to come in too

If I let it on the floor ..it followed me around .....sometimes running ahead & getting kicked ..so the butt pack worked good .
It was happy as a clam singing while it was inside .

Well a 2nd one hatched....IN MY LITTLE GIANT !
and it is quietier & bonding with the other chick ...whew ! Screaming chickies are sure noisey .
I put a plastic freezer container in there they like to sleep in it with their doggie who they peck.. I think it makes them feel safe .

Morning All,
Went to the Woodstock Fair yesterday, it was soooo hot and humid, we didn't stay long. I was really disappointed in the Poultry building. Not that there was much that could be done about the heat, but birds were panting, a lot looked beat up, some were molting (?) - how do you show a bird that is molting and expect it to do well?? I walked by one that had a completely bare back, I don't get it. They just looked awful. It was very small and I didn't see a lot of nice quality birds so I'm wondering if it leans more towards the 4-H'ers rather than people who raise and show more aggressively. There were a lot of cute bunnies for sale. I took pictures of the business cards they had out in front of their cages. I fell in love with this Lionhead bunny and want it but I don't have the space for it here. If I get land this week I'll give this person a call and get see if it's still available.

Speaking of land, my realtor finally got back to me and said she ended up asking a friend of hers down the road from both of us if he'd be willing to rent out any of his land. She said she's been asking around to some people and a lot of them say no because it's a liability, which is true and I never even thought of that. This guy has 30 acres, is literally 5 minutes down the road and would be willing to clear out (brush hog) an acre for me. I would have my own access, there's a road you turn on to get to his property, the left goes up to his house and to the right is where I would go to turn onto this acre. I'm going to see it tomorrow afternoon with her and get all the details. I'm just worried he's going to come back and say something higher than what I've already found for rent. But it's just sooo much closer. I wish I had a better idea as to what land could be rented for out here. I haven't been able to really find anything yet because it could depend on a lot of things. Also, I don't NEED a whole acre. But if I'm going to pay $50+ a month for the whole acre then I don't want to be too limited as to what I can do with it. Like I'd want to be able add more flocks (like my Orps or possibly some ducks) or even have the option to add goats later down the road if I wanted to. So we'll see. Right now I'm just nervous about the cost but I do have back up plans still if it's not something that will work out. So that's what's good about all this. And it's nice I'm seeing this property first before anything else.

I was talking about the thread...I posted then everyone disappeared...I thought for a moment that I killed it.

As for my other duck egg. It was dead too. I went out in the afternoon to see the broody had jumped the fence and the egg was getting cold. I got the incubator out. It was due to hatch at any moment. I candled it and no movement. I put it in the warm water to check it and still no movement...so I cracked it open. It looked like it died a little bit ago. the belly still hadn't been sucked all back in...Oh and it looked like it was going to have great magpie markings...Guess that I'll try again next spring!

Your girls are doing great and Stella has almost gotten all of her feathers in. She is looking good. Ella has been laying, just waiting on Stella to start back up...Oh and Bella Blue (our orp chick) is getting red waddles already..I think that Bella Blue is going to be a Fella Blue!!!

Hopefully this shows up correctly for everyone. Chicken stuff being added to the 1890 Fair in Marathon. I'll try getting in touch with Lilley's this week, get details about the cages. And if there is a sale/swap. I have extra boys to be rid of.
Heard a ruckus as we were canning pickles this morning. Hubby thought a hen was getting raped by the white EE jerk. Went out to see a hawk swoop by. The SS hen was hiding under the porch, hawk swooped back by into the pear tree next to the porch then took off. Then silly SS who is always by herself walked back up to the pine trees, where the rest of the flock took cover. Seen GLW roo standing guard at the edge of the trees, hens all behind him. Good boy.

OK folks - need a bit of advice here. My ladies are not laying as well as I would expect. The older ladies are now 3 years and the new ones just starting out laying. So is 3 too old for eggs?? They are looking a bit thin - I have never wormed them as I have seen no evidence of worms, I was wondering if they are going to molt early this year. They seem to be in good health, eating/drinking well, no signs of distress or illness. Thoughts please??
