Anyone know where that line originated? I don't.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
2
His house is in the village though;
3
He will not see me stopping here
4
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
5
My little horse must think it queer
6
To stop without a farmhouse near
7
Between the woods and frozen lake
8
The darkest evening of the year.
9
He gives his harness bells a shake
10
To ask if there is some mistake.
11
The only other sound's the sweep
12
Of easy wind and downy flake.
13
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
14
But I have promises to keep,
15
And miles to go before I sleep,
16
And miles to go before I sleep.

Anyone remember Stony saying how his Sumatra hens went away and showed up weeks later with chicks in tow? Well, curses....one of my Sumatra hens was sitting on 16 eggs. That's over a DOZEN I can't sell because I have no idea how long she has been sitting on them. Oh, what to do with all those eggs I am not allowing her to keep? I know, scramble them for the cheeps to eat. She is down to just 6...which is 6 more than I want, but she will just find someplace else to set up housekeeping if I take them all, so I marked and left 6. Now I will know which ones are new so I can sell them.

Now to get the duck to stop setting up new nests all over the darn place. Sigh.

I don't have Sumatras and I've be freaking out if one disappeared. That said I have an EE still on eggs and just pulled two that I know are not original to her. I candled them and mark them for house use, since they'd just be slightly started.

I have had some a bit further along with blood which is why I break all eggs into a separate bowl before putting them in the frying pan.

I bought a set up to separate my hens but have yet to used it. It's too late in the year for me to deal with chicks. The ee has two of Buckwheats that I really want to hatch then it's over. The other two are Ee and should hatch by weeks end.

I know there are folks here still hatching. I just can't. Chick starter feed costs are killing me.

Evening All,
Went to my "site visit" this afternoon and I have to say it would be perfect!! This guy has a small flock of 4 birds that are just for eggs, 2 white leghorns and 2 americaunas. Plenty of space, he runs electricity down there in the fall/winter for light supplement. I would have my own access so I wouldn't be a bother to him and his family while I was there. His house is way up on a hill and you can really only see the top floor to the roof from where the chickens would be staying. I like it. I'm not sure he would want me raising all sorts of animals on his land but he's only going to be asking like $25/month. Said he doesn't wait to make money off me but just wants to be sure that I'm not going to turn around and sue if I get hurt or blame him if something happens to my chickens, etc. I told him to write something up and I'd be happy to sign it. I sent him an email tonight showing him pictures of my set up, my coop, fencing etc. The only thing I need to purchase is some aviary netting so I can cover the run since I'm not going to be there all day to monitor. Anyone know where there are some good deals on some?

I don't even count my birds any more when I close the coop up at night. I have no clue how many birds I have total...mostly because I refuse to add them up. I know how many I have of each breed and I check to see if I have enough of each breed each night. Well, apparently I didn't really check that I had all of each breed over the weekend. I noticed that my egg counts were way down, so I turned on the light. Then all the BLUE eggs disappeared. SIGH. So tonight I got my bottom in gear and checked out the places I thought they might be laying.....turns out they like the flower garden with the fence around it. For the most part she will be safe there. I took 10 of the eggs away from her. So there is only the potential of 6 chicks, but only ONE has proven to be fertile in the past....soooo if she has to sit, hatching one chick isn't the worst thing in the world, right?

I DO NOT want any more chicks. I repeat --I DO NOT WANT ANY MORE CHICKS. However no one has informed my hens of this fact. I have a broody down there I REFUSE to give eggs to. She REFUSES to be broken. I am so not loving her right now. Maybe I should give her DUCK eggs. Sitting on those bad boys will break her brood, for sure. LOL

I hear you about chick feed. Just 2 weeks ago, I got everyone on layer. Now I am facing chick starter again. Sigh.

My tomatoes stayed green...just starting to get red now. I have to go check on them tomorrow. I had hundreds, perfectly formed, all green. Then they started falling off.

Yesterday I cut up all the ripish tomatoes I had salvaged and made 3 3/4 qts of sauce from them. Grrrr I am so down on tomatoes. Joanmom, did you get the wilt? Or just falling off? I remember ripening three grocery bags full of green tomatoes one year. I individually wrapped each tomato in newspaper, and checked them periodically, but we had fresh tomatoes for a very long time. In those days I had never had wilt, or even heard of it...

Lap, that pressure cooker sounds like mine, it was very reasonable. I have found that mine requires monitoring for the whole cooking time as it is a gauge. If I ever get another, I would go for the kind that has the choice of pressure in the little thing that wiggles on top of the vent...I have a hard time paying attention to anything for long periods of time, so staring at the gauge and adding or lowering flame is not my preference. But I can do it, as this is the cooker I have.

Well it looks like one of the B. Marans has gone broody. I think the newest girl. One chick or ten they stay broody the same length of time, I figure. I have no trouble "giving" chicks away. Or rather others have no guilt in taking them for free.

One EE did break so that's not to bad. Except I now have to candle the eggs under the only broody Ee in the coop now. I'm giving her til the end of the week and then it's toss the egg time.

In your case if you have Sumatras I can see how you can't count heads. I suspect here I'd be the same way. The woods would be full of chickens.

owww..you can pick them before they ripen ...& let them ripen inside .
Bananas give off gas ...will help them ripen

No Apples. You can take your last tomatoes, wash and dry them put them in a box layered on newspapers with a couple of apples. Cover the box and put it in a cool dark place. Check occasionally and pull any ripe or rotting tomatoes.

This gas is what the use in commercial industry to ripen tomatoes and why they taste yuk. Vine ripened is best but in a pinch you can use the apples.
