NY chicken lover!!!!

We had a hawk fly by too! It was low, about 5 feet of the ground, just outside the pen on the SW corner. DH and I were working on the porch windows and had a good view, but of course I ran out to the pen, but it had not stayed around. Earl gave a sor of growl warning that alerted the hens and us. He has been molting, poor thing, pin feathers on his neck and no tail.

Just was out in my garden, the tomatoes are horrible. They fruited nicely, and heavily, then the vines started to yellow, and the leaves are brown and the tomatoes have whit mushy mildew or insect holes or a sort of hard patterned patches on them...yuck. I fell like I should pile them all up, tomatoes and vines in the center of the garden and burn them. 50 plants...

Anyone else ha e trouble with their tomatoes? This garden never had much of anything in it, sunflowers were planted last year but didn't grow. It had been just unused land in the past. It is far from any other gardens.

Mine have not done well either. They like the heat and the lack of it and it being a cool summer really hurt them and my other heat loving plants like egg plant and peppers. My egg plant & peppers actually started blooming again 2 weeks ago. And my cabbage has finally started to grow again.

We got the blight too :( One whole raised bed was cherry and regular tomatoes. Far away from the garden I had two individual Super Sauce plants in individual barrels. Lost them all to blight. And I had done so well with starting them this year. The cool weather and more importantly the rain is to blame. Talked with a co-worker who has a veggie farm in weedsport, if you don't have the plants in a hoop house then they have become impossible to grow. Blight is carried by the weather. Hubby and I agreed no tomatoes next year, just isn't worth the garden space and lost time.
Now cucumbers we have an over abundance of. Did 2 batches of dill pickles today, and that only used what was picked this morning. Still have 2 bags full from this past week. Will make one batch of bread & butter for my brother then we are done. Going to start giving the cukes away, we still have pickles left from last year. Thinking will go pick peaches and maters at Indian Creek this week.
We have talked about getting a pressure canner. I see a Presto brand one at Walsmart for $70. Are those ones any good? Most of our stuff is water bath process, but would like to try corn, beans and squash. Save freezer space for the beef and chickens. Hubby does not like the idea of canned meat.

Hi folks, sorry to hear about the blight problems! That's aweful. The veggies are outrageous prices at the grocery store these days too, even tomatoes. Sorry I haven't been able to catch up on all the posts.

We just got back from Las Vegas, spent a week, got married, and had a blast. We stayed at the Monte Carlo, flew United Airlines, got free plays from Cosmopolitan, won a tiny bit and had fun. There was free entertainment, bands, everywhere. We went in the wave pool and lazy river at both Monte Carlo and Mandalay Bay. Mandalay Bay/Four Seasons (same resorts) was really nice, simulated beach but much more $$. Learned that if you take the SDX bus you can essentially ride for free because they don't usually check for tickets, only water bottles. I hid my water bottle in my pocket book and we didn't know about the tickets so we actually bought ours. There are trams all over too. We ate at Jean Phillippe's in the Bellagio and Grimaldi's too and both had really outstanding food.

Relatives took care of our chickens while we were away, all 3 are doing great and we're getting 2 eggs a day, every day for the past month. The coop is cleaned once a week and someone talks to them several times a day. They all seem very happy together and when we take one out, like during cleaning time, they talk to each other.

Speaking of bats, the night before we left for LV, my little boy and I were watching TV and this "thing" starts flying around the living room. I didn't notice at first but then realized that it's pretty big and thought it was a bird. When we realized it was a bat we opened the front door and it eventually flew out. Strange that you mentioned bats and we had one here.

Lynzii happy to hear that you have an area for your birds! That's so good. Well, got to try to get back in the NY time zone!

OK folks - need a bit of advice here. My ladies are not laying as well as I would expect. The older ladies are now 3 years and the new ones just starting out laying. So is 3 too old for eggs?? They are looking a bit thin - I have never wormed them as I have seen no evidence of worms, I was wondering if they are going to molt early this year. They seem to be in good health, eating/drinking well, no signs of distress or illness. Thoughts please??

At around 2 years they slow down ...about every other day or so ..not sure how often they lay after 3 ...

Morning Everyone,
I was reading an article The Chicken Chick shared today from her blog regarding supplemental lighting now that the days are getting shorter. Thought I would share seeing as how there are so many different opinions as to whether or not your hens need a "break" from egg laying and some choose to add light and some don't.
