...I have a constipated hen (Scarlet) . I brought her inside yesterday afternoon when I noticed she wasn't acting her normal self. She was eating and drinking yesterday, but nothing today. i have given her several warm baths from 20 minutes to 1 hour long. I don't think that she is egg bound. She hasn't been laying eggs for a few months now and seems that she can't decide if she wants to molt or not. She is one of my 1.5yr old sexlinks. I have checked her the best that I can to see if she has an egg in there, but can't feel anything. Her belly is swollen and soft. I haven't seen any blood in any poop anywhere so not sure what else to do. I have also given her some yogurt with a tum in it in case she is egg bound, I also gave her some applesauce with some olive oil. I forced fed her that a little while ago. I have managed to get a little poop to come out it was clear and white with green in it...
...Any suggestions that you have would be great...I don't want her to suffer any more then she has so hopefully I can help her...If not soon then I'll have to put her down...
i used to clean every 2 weeks..and that was for 4 birds ..now i clean by smell and looks ..if i smell it or it looks like theres alot of poo to straw , then i clean..its about one a week or so now ..I have a question for everyone. How often do you clean your coops? Do you clean by appearance or smell? ( you know when you start to smell ammonia.) Or, do you clean on a set schedule?
Last time I cleaned things were basically dry but I could just smell the ammonia so I cleaned of course. For me a schedule may mean cleaning a basically clean coop since the number of birds ebbs and flows.
Right now the Del coop will need cleaning before winter, since there is an increase of birds.
Thanks for the advice, I only act like I know everything.![]()

What is a good age to cull young roosters? I have 2 that I'm not sure what I'm going to do. They are the first LF chicks that I hatched out...Chipmunk and Pudgy...The are starting to spar with each other. I hope that they don't get any jerkier then they are now. I figured that I would cull them, but they are still pretty little. They are 13 weeks right now. I know that I want to wait a little longer if I do decide to cull so that hopefully I can fatten them up...But when would be a good time? Or should I just wait till they become a problem ...
I do deep litter, so I only do a complete cleanout a few times a year. The rest of the time I just add more shavings. I do spot cleans if needed.
I have her inside in a crate covered with blankets so that she stays calm, warm and dark. I do pull up the one side so that she has a little light and can see the chicks in the house so won't feel to alone. She has food, water and apple sauce with olive oil in their for her to eat and drink. It looks like she ate a little of the apple sauce. I did find a small amount of poop yesterday afternoon and 2 more little piles last night, but her belly is still swollen...I forgot that you had a similar thing happen with Buckwheat!!!...I'll add the grit to her food, I just hope that she will start to eat and drink. I'll try and get some of the Durmycin as soon as I can.Don't force anything into her, if you think she's backed up. Putting more in won't move it.
I would put food for her but top it off with lots of Granite Grit. NOT oyster shell. Make sure she has water. You could add a little vitamins.
Check her vent. See if it's moist or dry. It should be moist. Let her rest don't pester her. You could cover her pen and keep it dark. Seems to me if chickens "unload" at night it might stimulate her to go.
I'v never found force feeding to be helpful.
When Buckwheat was all swollen I added some Duramycin to her water. Left it for a couple days and then it was back to just water. I let her rest. She had food and I did dump a lot of grit on top so she would eat it. I made sure there was a lot of grit on top of her food. I did of course have her by herself and she could hear the chicks in the brooder across the room.
I find that sometimes they just need to rest. Kinda like we do when we don't feel good. We don't like folks to keep coming in the room and pestering us. We don't like folks trying to shove things down our throats, poking and prodding us, do we?
Hope some of this helps.

Quote: Is it her crop or below that? Is it squishy or hard? If her crop is blocked, she won't poop much cause food won't go down into intestines. If she has a squishy belly, that is water, and you can try to get it out with a syringe, but its been my experience that is will seem to help, but they die anyway later. If the crop is hard, you can try to massage it gently to move things around & see if it becomes unblocked. Once, someone suggested I give mine with blocked crop wine, no food, massage. The wine helps ferment the food inthe crop and breaks it up. It worked...although I was eyeing that bowl of wine, seemed extraordinary measure...if she won't drink it, you can syringe it into her mouth little at a time.
