NY chicken lover!!!!

Chased a skunk away from the gate last night .... any ideas on skunk management ? :)

I do NOT want sprayed - I am extra sensitive about that and can get literally sick to my stomach with that smell.

My son & I went to a tattoo parlor today ...He wanted to get his ears pierced ....I Asked & looked at tattoos ..
I thought about a little chick tattoo ...for my inside ankle ..just for me ...it would be 60.00 for a 1/2 hour job ..
Didnt do it ....most stuff I looked at was too weird for me. Maybe something like this

Hi all - busy time of year. Trying to downsize, not sure how I went from 15 to 60 chickens in a years time but I did. I'm having troubles with the most common predator. After my mother passed away we took in her little fufu dog, about 15 lbs with wiry hair. A terrier mix, I'd guess. I'm not a morning person so I got up early to let the dogs out, then let them back in and went back to bed. When I did get up I found a dead chicken in the living room with feathers everywhere. I shut all the chickens in at night and they are supposed to be fenced in during the day but apparently one flew over the fence unnoticed by me. I felt sick for the chicken and sick for the mess. I really don't like little dogs. UGH!

Morning all. Crazy day yesterday. People are crazy. Came home and let the cheeps out to play. Still no rain and whatever bug is in my lawn has the chickens tearing it up pretty good. I have large bare spots now. I will have to reseed it and keep them locked up for a while come spring. Its so dry that the chickens in the big run have broken through the top 1 inch of packed soil and have large holes in their run. I will have to fill it in with more pine mulch. It was packed down so hard you couldnt get a shovel through it.

Lynzi--your silkies look good. I am hoping for a good crop of blues come spring but you know how it is with silkies.

Sally8--sorry for your loss and discovery of a dead chicken in your house. I hope you can get that dog trained. My downsizing is sitting in canning jars and freezer bags.

Still have a few more to go. They just dont know it yet!

Ugh I'm sorry, my dogs are definitely the worst predator I have :( I have a very high fence separating the dogs from the chickens but once in awhile one will get over the fence. Luckily the last 2 to get over the fence have been fine (minus one that is just missing all her tail feathers now). Luckily my dogs are a great Pyrenees mix (very soft mouth) and a cattle dog mix who is very good with the "leave it" command.

Our dog yard and the chicken run share a fence and after one of my hens and my Roo went flying over I added some fence around the top to make it taller. I just used some chicken wire and some small rods and added a few feet. Haven't had that problem again. Ended up doing it all around the whole chicken yard. Works great to keep them from flying over since I don't have a top to my run..It's just a fenced in area where all the coops are in.
