Hi all...

I'm so sad right now and feel like I've been sucker punched. I went out to the coop to check on why the girls were making a ruckus to find our favorite hen, "Chumley" dead on the coop floor. I am stunned and even though I knew this came with the turf, I'm still in disbelief. She seemed OK this morning. She was simply "the best." I'm dreading telling my younger son today; we were very attached to her and she was more like a pet than the others. I feel so bad thinking I missed something.... She will be sorely missed.

i no my gramma used to tell us not to give the cats food free choice .she said a cat thats free to eat when ever it wants , wont be a good mouser ..not sure how much truth there is in that ..it makes sense .. my cats are good mole and vole hunters and only once in awhile they get mice ..lots of frogs tho ..i have found live frogs hoping around in the house .and i am not talking about just 1 or 2..lol....
heck my cats stay clear of the birds and the coop ..i am stuck using traps ..
i leaver my front door to the coop open all summer long as well ..but the mice dont come back around till fall tho it seems..then they come in droves..


TOB so sorry to hear about chumley..its never easy losing a family member..

I was cleaning out the old beehive the other day and was surprised to see several pairs of eyes looking at me!! Yup - mice! Since I don't need the beehive this winter, I decided to let them stay until Spring, we worked out a temp. lease/renting agreement..................

Now this reminds me that perhaps the reason I had flowers on my apple tree but no apples is because there were no bees. I didn't notice any on my neighbors tree either. I'll have to check my other neighbors pear tree.

If you're not going to use your hive perhaps you'd consider selling it? DW says it's something we should get.

However with her being sick and all, I've talked about selling and moving into an apartment, but it made her upset and she cried so I don't talk of it anymore.

The garden is getting cleaned and ready for winter. Didn't see any mice but have seen some Froads. (Frogs and Toads, new word)

I've been nice and joke with you and support you and give you thumbs up all the time and you default to thinking I am being mean and not giving a nod to your position ?

I listen to you and was beating you to the punch about explaining .... oh well.

I had a boss that raved about my work for 4 years ... I made one error on a mileage sheet from handwritten notes - and I was never trusted again. My good standing and long history of great work held no weight against one error.

I'll just lurk and learn ... guess only a bad reputation holds weight with most. I'll keep my sharing urge well under wraps since I don't have the slightest idea all the stuff I should write around a statement so as not to offend someone.

I'm not upset, it would take more than a disagreement about mice to tarnish a friendship.

I just stumbled upon this thread...nice to know there are a LOT of NY chicken owners!!
I am on the hunt for great NY breeders of Orpingtons & Wyandottes -- I know I can get them shipped in from hatcheries, but would rather buy locally. I'm near Albany, NY and see some GORGEOUS birds at our fairs...wondering if they're locally bred.

I got Cuckoo Marans from him years ago and when I contacted him last he'd switched to Orpingtons.

My fav is Hinkjc farms in PA for orps. She won't ship chicks though.

I read that the mice detect where warm air is escaping from your house, and they are not only attracted to that, but often find a way in through these little nooks and crannies.

OMG!!! My house has so many nooks and crannies for air to escape!! The entire neighborhood must be attracted. I literally said to my husband last night, "We need to put plastic or something on that old door with the cracks in it to block the heat from escaping". When they put in the propane, the kerosene, the cable and whatever, phone I think, they just drilled holes in the side of the house... and left them open. I told my husband if the back end of the house wants to catch fire.. that is fine, so long as he "responds" with the fire company before it gets to the really old section.
On a different note, my friend made a jar of pickled eggs and I told him that someday, I would get some banties and give him the eggs to pickle for pickled poppers.. lol.
As for the breeds.... Blue Copper Marans, Blue Orpington, and a Lavender Orpington... awefully pretty. Other than that I want buff orpingtons, rhode island reds, Delaware (love that look) and I like that blue laced red Wyandotte. Nothing much...lol

Some of the breeds you mention do come in Bantam sizes. I have Delawares but won't have anything til spring. Mine are a combination of my own line, Geogia and Kathyinmo.

That was greek.... I am looking to get girls in the Spring... not sure what Georgia or kathyimo are, I assume types of delawares? that confuses me, so you will have to explain an teach me...
