My birds don't have a choice they have to go out. My coops are just like sleeping and nesting areas. I have a big fenced in run that all my coops are in but it has no top. I have to put the food and water outside so if they want to eat of drink they have to go out. I have these little shelters that I put the food in so that it stays dry and mostly out of the wind. I also have the old duck hut that they like to hang out in. So they come out when ever I come out. I go out several times a day to bring fresh warm water for them to drink I don't have any place to put a heated water bowl so I have to bundle up and go out to make sure that they have water and also to get the eggs that they lays so they don't freeze. My girls lay at all times during the day.

You could scramble them up some eggs to have some more protein? I get my feed from my local Co-op. It is an Egg Producer with a min of 21% protein. The seem to be doing well with it. I think that they sell it at Country Max. Not sure if you have one by you. I know that there are others that are close to you that might know where you might be able to find feed.
mine have access to feed and drink in the coop ..i no even when i shovel a nice area for them . i still only get a couple to come out ..i no i have picked up some pretty cold eggs the last few days ..i go out about every few hrs to check onm them ..i notice they are hiding some of the eggs in the straw in the nest ..is that co op in chautauqua county by chance ..lol ..thats sounds like a pretty good feed ..i no the tcs store in lakewood only has feed thats 16 % same with the still water feed store ..i am scrambling eggs starting to day ..thanks

For More Protein Add _ Milk , Yougurt , Eggs , Black sun flower Seeds<- these are like candy to them

i was looking at the black sun flower seeds this morning at the feed store ..they only sell it in big bags and i was short on money to buy it this morning but may run back out this afternoon ..thanks for the recipe ..i'll be trying it ..
Purina Flock Raiser is 20 per cent protein. It seems to be available lots of places.
Yesterday was so windy and cold I locked them up again after they ate. I think it was because I was worried about skiing in that weather that I was keeping them in. Idid fine, only took 4 runs, no one else was skiing much either, but double neck warmers was the way to go. I was warm while I was out, and came in quickly if I felt any chill. The snow was wonderful, but they were blowing snow at the chairlift which made the ride up horrible. They made a lot of snow last night though.

When I filled the bowls this morning one was upside down, and there was frozen fermented fee in a pile under it. When I look out today, every so often someone goes out and works on it, so I guess it's like an outdoor flock block. They mostly are in the coop, but come out to stretch their legs or have some alone time.

i looked for the flock raiser at the lakewood store and i didnt see it at still water either ..i am on a waiting list for the feather fixer from nutrena but i dont no when they will get a shipment of it in ..i no my poor roo's going crazy being locked up for 3 days with all those girls ..lol just kidding ladys ..lol he looks at me as to say you gotta spring me man ..i cant take another day of this ..lol
i did shovel a area for them but no one venturesd out ..i think the cold wind was just to much ..
I've got one of those but am or was using it for flowers but they never did good in it. I think I'll clean it out and season it up. Cast Iron lasts forever. They had a lot in AL antique stores but it was expensive. They take time to season and must be cared for. Not dishwasher safe but easy to clean. I have one I cook eggs in and we refer to it as "my frying pan".
my mom always had a set ..they are the best pan out there and unlike the coated ones , the cast iron ones are better for your health..theres no coating to come off over time and get in your food
..

Of course this is just MY opinion. Properly seasoned they work fine for me. They do require some care.

I started using a fry pan for my eggs in the am cuz the Teflon one kept sticking and they get scratched. Can't put Teflon in the dishwasher either so for me why bother.

Nope we are in Madison County. Sorry. I know that the deliver, but not that far.

Kinmera lives a few towns over. She may be able to let you know where locally she gets her stuff?

@Metella Those millies are just beautiful! I'm thinking of starting a flock of Langshans and they have feathered feet also. What I figured is keep them out of the mud and they should be alright?

Yeah - I never had an issue with feathering - and I have feathered shanked Marans also ... but again - my set up is based on lots of space per bird. They are rarely ever in the coop all day .... mostly they come out and have lines of pines, raspberry bushes, and all sorts of things that they break into smaller groups and hang out under all day ..... so there really is only one small space that rarely ever gets muddy .... if you coop up them up more than I do - then I just say - keep the shavings well mixed and you should have no problems. If mine are locked in all day - they mostly pout and stay on their roost staring out the door ! ha ha

Oh - also for any considering these or similar bird breeds - my millie lays a LOT of eggs per year. They are small - but very consistent. So she certainly can be used as an egg producer! Just not jumbo eggs...

Boskelli ... I see your challenge and raise you a cute picture ....

My set up is mostly free range ... so there is not really mud except a few days a year .... I do deep litter on the floor of the coop - so no mud inside coop for inside days. Outside days I have so much land that I have grass and leaves except right in front of the coop - so that is only a step or two for Miss and Mr. Millie and they are inside (note the roo below is not my breeder male - his waddles are not SOP).

I also have my millies with the big flock unless I separate to get hatching eggs ...my breeder pair gave me 2 hens and a roo last spring. Peep pictures below. Baby Roo went to a new home 3 weeks ago ... and he is king of the land - they love him and bring him in to play !!!

I have a Mottled d'uccle and LOVE her. She is the smallest bird that I have and she is fine in with the others. I wish that she was a little but more friendly, but it may be because she was the kids favorite and they always tried to catch her to hold her. I can touch her, but she sees the kids and she runs. Her feather feet get muddy, but doesn't seem to bother her at all. I may have to keep an eye out this year to see if I can get a few more. I got her from TSC, they said that she was a silkie when we got her...Oh well. Will have to see when they get more next year if I can find another one.

She is just fine with the other birds. She just pushes her way in to eat. (No that is not the only bowl...I have 3 other bowls of food so no one has to fight to eat)

She's lovely !

Yes - mine get right in there and push for food and water (and like you - there are always other options and plenty that is left over for the wild birds)

.....you've almost got me.............they certainly would do well in the 'orchard area' that's under development....
