Purina Flock Raiser is 20 per cent protein. It seems to be available lots of places.
Yesterday was so windy and cold I locked them up again after they ate. I think it was because I was worried about skiing in that weather that I was keeping them in. Idid fine, only took 4 runs, no one else was skiing much either, but double neck warmers was the way to go. I was warm while I was out, and came in quickly if I felt any chill. The snow was wonderful, but they were blowing snow at the chairlift which made the ride up horrible. They made a lot of snow last night though.
When I filled the bowls this morning one was upside down, and there was frozen fermented fee in a pile under it. When I look out today, every so often someone goes out and works on it, so I guess it's like an outdoor flock block. They mostly are in the coop, but come out to stretch their legs or have some alone time.
i havent let the birds out in 2 days ..i think they are going stir crazy ..i hung a squash i split in half in the coop..i see they ate the seeds but i think the meat part is frozen ..i think i'll hang some apples for them this afternoon..do you all let your birds out when its this cold ..i opened the door for them the other day and shoveled the run for them and they still never came out ..my heated water bowls working great ..the 2 hanging waterers are frozen everytime i go out there ..i am buying more heated waterers ..i also have 3 feeders i fill with pellets ..i have one water and one feeder on one side of the coop and the others on the other side of the coop ..i think a few birds try to keep others from eating so thats why i have 2 diffrent places for them to eat and drink..i cant find any feed with more then 16 % protein ..anyone have any ideas were to find feed with higher protein ..i live in lakewood ..the tsc has feed but i dont see any with higher protein ..any help would be great ..thanks in advance..

Evening All,
Everyone is surviving the frigid temps here. Amazing how many people here in CT freak out over their birds and go get heat lamps. Even with all the shared stories of fires that have occured they still hear their coops. I don't get it. My birds were all fine this morning. AND I even got an egg from one one of them.
Chickenstock Picnic - is love to go but would like if it is kept in NY. I'm really not up for traveling to any other states especially since I'm coming from CT. I'll probably make a trip out of it and park it in Syracuse somewhere.![]()
A few breeds I have an eye out for are Salmon Favs, Welsummer, Buckeye, Australorp, and blue/green egg layers. I have a Barred Rock, Cochin, EE, Buckeye, Australorp, and 4 red stars right now and like all of them and they all are doing great.
I think (as far as I have read/learned) that I have a laid back crew so I don't want to add any typically higher strung birds to the mix. I do have a second coop and run started that I will keep the newbs in until they are old enough to mix into the current flock. The new and old run are side by side so they can familiarize themselves safely but I think it best to keep the general profile of my flock to the submissive breeds.
