NY chicken lover!!!!

Brrrrr!!! Have only been a chicken owner since August and this is the coldest night here near Albany, NY since owning them.
Have listened to everyone on here and have not heated the coop. So far, so good. All are active, happy, and still laying. Fingers crossed they're all OK tonight!!
Sarah
It was the coldest it has been in the coop 20 Degrees ..
Frozen fermented food ...
I have a regular heating pad 1/2 under the two bowls ..still tweaking it ..put some foil under bowls to see if it transfers some of the heat
Middle of the bowls stays thawed ..outside of bowl frozen . Maybe for the winter I should feed them as much as they can eat ...2 times a day

When it is cold like this I give them a warm treat ..
Milk warmed up over - Bread cubes , cooked oatmeal , rice
I add stuff like black sunflower seeds , Extra milk scrambled eggs , raw Shredded carrots , Minced Kale , onions , tomatoes , leftovers

Ours are still laying pretty well--10/15/30 and that was our worst day this week! Most days, we get 12-14 eggs. Chickens are 21-weeks old on Monday!
I have a Flock Block in the coop, throw Scratch each morning and night, and have a 3-gallon heated waterer from TSC. Works well. I still put a second waterer out in the covered run, which they like too. Have to switch that out when I get home from work each day for a thawed one :)

That's why it's always nice to have first year hens going into winter - they lay right through!

Well I know I talked to the TSC near me and was told they would be glad to let us use their back lot for a chicken thing. If would of course mean bathrooms, but also lugging bbq's or other stuff.

Point being that might work for you.

TSC actually has a protocol in place for swaps. They even have advertising for the events. That's one reason why I want to use them.

Can relate to frozen ff. I have been trying to keep them supplied every which way I can think of without heating the dish. This morning I warmed it before bringing it out and less than 3 hours later it was frozen. Tomorrow morning I am going to try only giving what they will eat within 1/2 hour and trading out the pans a few times. They always have dry feed in a creep feeder but they really don't eat much of that, they rather the ff.

They must be happy, though, because they started laying right before NY's and haven't stopped. Today they gave us 6/9. Not sure how many layers I have in there out of the nine, but I am pretty sure the 5 June girls are all laying.

Wondering if any of you know of local sources for hatching eggs. I am in Saratoga. I haven't found anything but I also am new to this so I might be looking in the wrong places. I have been considering trying some from Papas Poultry or the Ameracaunas on the BST thread, but would rather go local if I could, at least while I get the hang of incubating.

Well, stay warm folks. According to acuweather its -2 and -20 with wind chill right now, expected to go down to -7 and -37 wind chill overnight. Yup, Thirty Seven. Brr.

Just was surfing the web before bed and checked out Nature Berry Farms and they are working on their list of chicks for this year. Looks like their first group will be coming in on or around February 27th. They don't have their pricing up yet, but is says that they are still working on it. I only mention it cause the first chicks on their list are Buckeyes. I know someone was looking for them, I figured that at least it was an option.

All is well here. Very cold. All the kids seem to be doing alright with the bitter cold. They spend much of their time hiding out. The chickens that I got from Why do Birds are doing well. They are handling the cold pretty well. I have made them a little straw box out of my egg crate nest box and they like to be in there. They are learning that they have to go out to eat and drink and will hang out for a few minutes before going back into their coop. I did have a half eaten egg in their run today so will have to keep a close eye on that. It was frozen before they started to eat it not that that makes it any better, but will have to monitor that closely. Can't have the doing that!

Ours went out today ...looking confused ..wheres the treats ?
I threw the scratch under the deck before they came out ....they followed me over there ...
Oh thats where the treats were .....
Time to put them to bed ? They needed a escort back to the coop ...they where all hunkered down in there .
3 didnt come out at all ..I had to chase 2 of them out with the Roof snow cleaner
One older hen was near the edge under the deck ...I didnt see her until I did a head count ..and saw she was missing ..
She acted cold so I put her in the cellar for a while to warm up
I dont know if I will let them out ...Today ...I dont like them cooped up ..but it so cold out there
