NY chicken lover!!!!

Purina Flock Raiser is 20 per cent protein. It seems to be available lots of places.
Yesterday was so windy and cold I locked them up again after they ate. I think it was because I was worried about skiing in that weather that I was keeping them in. Idid fine, only took 4 runs, no one else was skiing much either, but double neck warmers was the way to go. I was warm while I was out, and came in quickly if I felt any chill. The snow was wonderful, but they were blowing snow at the chairlift which made the ride up horrible. They made a lot of snow last night though.

When I filled the bowls this morning one was upside down, and there was frozen fermented fee in a pile under it. When I look out today, every so often someone goes out and works on it, so I guess it's like an outdoor flock block. They mostly are in the coop, but come out to stretch their legs or have some alone time.

I wish we had some snow here! I like to x-country, but there's barely a dusting

. could do without it being quite so windy tho' - it sure drops the temp to dangerously cold in no time. My girls are inside the barn, so they sit under the tractor all day grumbling. Made them a suet block the other day - time consuming but easy to do and way cheaper than store bought!

Evening All,
Everyone is surviving the frigid temps here. Amazing how many people here in CT freak out over their birds and go get heat lamps. Even with all the shared stories of fires that have occured they still hear their coops. I don't get it. My birds were all fine this morning. AND I even got an egg from one one of them.

Chickenstock Picnic - is love to go but would like if it is kept in NY. I'm really not up for traveling to any other states especially since I'm coming from CT. I'll probably make a trip out of it and park it in Syracuse somewhere. :)

i havent let the birds out in 2 days ..i think they are going stir crazy ..i hung a squash i split in half in the coop..i see they ate the seeds but i think the meat part is frozen ..i think i'll hang some apples for them this afternoon..do you all let your birds out when its this cold ..i opened the door for them the other day and shoveled the run for them and they still never came out ..my heated water bowls working great ..the 2 hanging waterers are frozen everytime i go out there ..i am buying more heated waterers ..i also have 3 feeders i fill with pellets ..i have one water and one feeder on one side of the coop and the others on the other side of the coop ..i think a few birds try to keep others from eating so thats why i have 2 diffrent places for them to eat and drink..i cant find any feed with more then 16 % protein ..anyone have any ideas were to find feed with higher protein ..i live in lakewood ..the tsc has feed but i dont see any with higher protein ..any help would be great ..thanks in advance..

rancher i told the wife i want the cast iron set of pans like that one ..the dutch oven and the skillits are the best ..i remember as a kid my mom always had cast iron pans ..i no they aint cheep tho..the dutch ovens are great in the summer and cooking on open fire ..theres a show on tv called cooking in history or something like that .anyways the guy shows ya how to use them and cook on open flames like a fire place ..

great vid gramma..i always see the n asa footage on yahoo news and theres always the ones that say they see aliens or foot prints..now i see whats really going on ..mars is were chickens come from ..lol i bet thats were the olive eggers are from..those green eggs are a give away ..lol

I've got one of those but am or was using it for flowers but they never did good in it. I think I'll clean it out and season it up. Cast Iron lasts forever. They had a lot in AL antique stores but it was expensive. They take time to season and must be cared for. Not dishwasher safe but easy to clean. I have one I cook eggs in and we refer to it as "my frying pan".

Well I don't have heat to only one hoop coop but I don't turn it on. To worried it will kick off and then they'll be too cold.

No one seems to bothered. I do wish it would snow some though. When it warmer it snows and it's a good insulating factor.

Well now depending on what you're plans are I'm sure you can find something to do here. I can't offer a place, but someone might if you have a camper.

Depending on how long you plan to stay there is stuff to do at the Destiny Mall and the Zoo. We also have Syracuse Stage if you're into plays. Not sure what's going to be running.

Let me know and perhaps you and yours and DW and I could get together for coffee.

Young birds don't mind the cold so much, I think. I am getting eggs. I think my hoop birds are healthier than my wooden coop birds. I'm seriously considering making all coop hoops.

I think they'd do better with the Egg layer 21% , but I don't go to the Country Max near me since I don't care for the management there. Not since i got old feed pawned off on me. I'd have to drive to Cicero and don't really want to do that. Perhaps I could pick up feed on the weekends when the manager is not there. I'd hate to see him lose his job but I wish they'd replace him. There is a nice girl that works there. She'd be a better manager I think.

A few breeds I have an eye out for are Salmon Favs, Welsummer, Buckeye, Australorp, and blue/green egg layers. I have a Barred Rock, Cochin, EE, Buckeye, Australorp, and 4 red stars right now and like all of them and they all are doing great.

I think (as far as I have read/learned) that I have a laid back crew so I don't want to add any typically higher strung birds to the mix. I do have a second coop and run started that I will keep the newbs in until they are old enough to mix into the current flock. The new and old run are side by side so they can familiarize themselves safely but I think it best to keep the general profile of my flock to the submissive breeds.

I like my welsummers. Even the roo is calm. I also have EEgrs and brown leghorns. Wanted a colorful egg basket. The brown leghorns are very hard to herd back to the coop. They are like road runners.

I have one Welsummer, there is a woman in Pompey that breeds them. I'm getting some buff Orp and partridge Rock eggs from her (along with Del and EE from Rancher) for a valentines hatch. Her Welsummers won't be ready till later, so will likely do another hatch this year just so I can get some more of them.
