NY chicken lover!!!!

Rancher, do you have maran fertile eggs to sell ?
Not right yet, but maybe another month or so.
My plan will be to put them under broody hens. I have about 10 hens that normally set spring, summer and fall
When I set the incubator up, I will start with a backyard mix from my hens. I have to set up a breeding pen.
I have 4 different breeds I am going to work with this year.
Not at this time. Can't say what will happen in a month or so. I keep Birchen marans. I'm working to improve my stock color.

Some people are crazy. I once was given a tour of a house on my mail route. The previous owners let the dogs use a room in the house that had a cork floor. Boy did it stink!

Too, our next door neighbor had dogs. Maggie was a golden mix and we'd rarely see them out. Entrance onto the enclosed front porch revealed the smell. All the mail persons mentioned it. When the owner died it sold for little.

I could go on and on. Having been a mailman you see plenty.
It's really unfortunate that the laws tie the hands...If they have food water and shelter...that's it. It's too bad that each County doesn't have an animal control officer that could seize the animals for more or codes for sanitary violations.

I called the housing dept. and got told that as long as it's their house there was nothing they could do. Every summer this lady had her air conditioner on and I'd have to walk through the stink to put mail in her mailbox.

Can't imagine what would happen if we did not have in place the shelters and ASPCA that we do have.

The other problem with that is that there aren't enough places to put them once they are seized. It is a sad situation no matter how you look at it.

Hi all. I simply don't have the time to back and read the thousand or so posts I've missed so I hope you are all well. It's been well below zero every night here and what is up with the wind? We've never had this much wind. My chickens have hardly left the coop in over a week. I don't heat it but it must be warmer.
It makes me so angry that people just drop their pets wherever they want. I have to drive by the fish and game club here and people are always dropping off cats and dogs. My husband is always yelling "Don't look, keep your eyes forward" because I can't leave tiny kittens or puppies there. That's why we have 3 dogs and 5 cats, and that's after we've down sized.
In Watkins Glen we have an Animal Sanctuary that used to take animals in but I think they are full. Also, near Rochester there is a place called Lollipop Farms that always will take them. After I rescued a very pregnant cat with some half grown kittens already I couldn't keep over 20 cats so I went to Lollipop. They made me feel horrible. I was sobbing when I left and after I donated $200.00 to leave the strays. The man there told me to keep the money and have the remainder of my pets spayed/neutered. Everyone here was already spayed or neutered including my husband. That man made me feel like a horrible person. We've been having people throwing kittens out of cars. What a very sad world we are now living in.
Rancher, thanks for the laugh with the jokes. I'll read them any time.

Well, that's really rude of him, especially with you donating money to help with their costs, which is more than what most people do. I hope you explained the situation to him and made him feel bad for being so horrible to you. I get that some people, especially those who take in animals all the time, get sick of seeing irresponsible pet owners, but that behavior is not the way to deal with it. In fact, that behavior is what causes people to abandon their animals instead of taking them to a place like that, because who wants to get yelled at so badly that they end up crying just because they realized they can't take care of their animals and were doing the responsible thing instead of just dumping them? Sorry if this came out as a rant, but that just makes me mad. People should not be yelled at for doing the right thing when they realize they can't take care of an animal any longer and are getting it to place that can, instead of leaving it to fend for itself or letting it starve because they can't feed it.

There are so many people moving and leaving their pets behind. It's just a sad situation and those poor poor animals...

Regardless of whether there are enough places to put them, they should not be left on the side of the road to die. That poor cat was alive and starved or froze to death. Inspite of our current situation we would have found a way to deal with them.

While some would most would not leave a baby on the side of the road. They would leave it where someone would find it. Heck they could have just dropped them off in front of a store, house or even at the shelter early in the am.

Post a darned ad on CL and say, we're poor or we don't want them and the ASPCA won't take them.

You need to stand up to these people and write a letter to the town and the newspaper of how these people are do deal with.

We once took in a dog that had been abandoned on the mail route. Maggie dropped 10 puppies around Christmas. I had found homes for four of eight. Then I found a lady in Phoenix who took the other four. She had the cleanest shelter Iv'e even been to.

I had a lady snap at me at Wanderers Rest in Canastota but I didn't care. We just could not care for one more cat. People knew we were cat people and would leave them on our porch.

This is why it's so important to work toward spaying and neutering strays.
