Good thing - I'm sure Colo is not going to make it much longer - his leg is not getting better and the other one is not working now because I think it was overcompensating .... So really hope I get a nice batch of babies from him!

Those darn Millie are NOT laying ... they are fat and happy - I've let them out to free range for whole days at a time .... Mr Millie is trying to do his job, but the hens aren't interested yet - I was hoping some warn days would do the trick .... but then we got a full week of rain and clouds..... I've got 2 to 2.5 weeks for them to get cracking for Boskilli's eggs so they can hatch before chickenstock !

ARGH !!! Giving them great food - and telling them how wonderful they are ..... BLAH !

There has been coverage on the news of lots of states west of us having bird flu. Wonder what we can do to avoid that in our state and flocks. Maybe make sure the hatcheries our birds come from are not in the affected states...and minimal exposure to wild birds.

Here I don't feed the wild birds, but they are here, no real way to keep them away. Also, I like them, and they eat insects...balance is everything in life, why is it so difficult to attain?

I skimmed through the Avian Influenza article in Chicken Whisperer's magazine. I avoid news/media for any useful information, but do stay alert to how far east it is traveling. Migratory birds are the primary delivery of the influenza, so it will eventually move to our area due to the flyways converging in the winter.

Rancher- I see there is an article on Delaware vs Today's Boilers that may be of interest to you :)

I read somewhere that there is an outbreak in Ontario province, Canada - just across the lake. Commercial ops. Hope it doesn't jog south

Thank you for thinking of me. I've booked marked the site. Do they have a hard copy of the magazine that I can subscribe to?

I just gave away 7 due to our long trip and wouldn't you know it I've been fighting a Delaware broody hen. I keep taking her from the nest box, but am sad to be leaving as they don't often go broody. I've banded her #7. Hopefully the band will stay on her leg.

DD will be taking care of the birds and with two small children she won't be able to keep up with a broody hen with chicks too.

I'd like to put a shout out for anyone who buys cat litter in jugs. I could use about ten. The squirrels ruined quite a few last year. I'm tempted to get a cat just so I have the jugs.

Did anyone see the Dog in yesterdays paper? or was it todays. How can anyone do such a thing? He looks so nice and I'd be tempted to try to adopt him if we weren't going away so much this year.

he was finally showing signs of real distress and both legs were loosing strength.

Used ether to slowly put him to sleep - then used CO2 gas after he eased into sleep. Very hard to do. My sweet boy.
