NY chicken lover!!!!

They sure are! How are your svart honas doing?
They are a lovely bird! I wonder how different they are from the Cemani? So far I have a beautiful flock of cocks!!! I have some new hona's from GFF I got. They are about 3 weeks old. I can see the start of a comb on one...holding hope for the others & 3 eggs in the incubator! Thanks!

I have the opposite problem with my cemanis - I could only get pullets :lol: Not usually a bad thing but in this case it was, lol. I've heard it said by those who own both that the cemanis are more gamey in appearance.

XD we could, I wonder how they would look? Would be an interesting project, to be sure.

Congrats !  Any chance you can get a couple bags for me ? Im in Jordan
If I can fit more in my car I will. With the three kids I don't have much room. I live in Constantia and come down into east Syracuse on Wednesday am.

@purpletie sorry for your loss!

My dog sneaked out and got an EE rooster. We caught him and thought the roo was ok but 3 days later he was dead in coop in the am. Guess the dog shook him more than I thought. Down to 3 Roos and 5 hens. Good thing we have 17 chicks in the basement.

The chick with the bum leg is still eating and drinking ok so we decided to see how he/she grows.

For you hatch-a-holics, I found this in an Ithaca Farmer FB group posted by Laura Hobbs:

We are selling our Kuhl incubator and a Hatcher. Both hold 1200 chicken eggs at a time. They are older models but work well. The newer models are all electronic but the incubator has a solidstate temperature controller. The Hatcher has a newer add on electronic temperature controller. We found the units to work very well but in the end we did not need an incubator this big. What is great about these units is the capacity to have many batches going at once that are started at different times. We have used this unit for chicken, Turkey and duck eggs. We are asking $3000.- for both units - OBO. A brand new Kuhl 1200 incubator will run you $9000+. I am including a beauty shot from a commercial website since my picture is so dark. Message me on Facebook. We are located near Owego, NY.

I think they are so similar...but, I have never seen the two next to one another... I think the Cemani is a heavier bird but who knows...The Hona's are more endangered than the Cemani but there are several BYC members who are raising them now. I just love this bird...!!! Would be a cool project.

I suspect he's selling it because he can't make any money. For some reason folks would rather buy from far away hatcheries.

TSC had nearly all their chicks and ducklings straight run, yet folks were buying.

I post EE's straight run and no one buys. But boy if I put "free chickens" and my inbox gets over loaded. You know I have to say to that don't you.

Last year Mt. Healthy go hit with sal mineo.

I could be wrong but I believe the hona's and cemani's originated from the same breed, and the hona's imported to Sweden century's ago adapted to their colder climate, and being breed separately evolved into their own breed.

We have a 'farmers market' 'Frog Pond Farms' in Bainbridge that usually sells tons of chicks, ducks, turkeys and guineas. I heard they were not getting them till late because of the cold weather. Was there yesterday and all they had was a few different breeds of rooster chicks ???
All their brooders were set up but empty. Checked the list to see when everything was coming in! it looks like they 25 or so pullets a week for a few weeks, and nothing else!! I've noticed the place going downhill the last couple years since the old man got cancer and his son is taking over, a lot of not so good produce last summer. I hope the son can get a hold of the place before it does a nose dive, it's been a super popular place for many years, getting big, big green houses, everything. Usually packed even on rainy days in the middle of the day and week when you would think it would be less crowded.
