NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm so sorry to hear that! Who would have thought they could get stuck like that!

I lost a bantam cochin pullet last year when she jumped up on a bale of shavings and fell head first between the bale and the wall. The space was so small she must have wiggled until she jammed herself tight and couldn't breathe. Feeling sad for everyone who has been losing their animals. I felt bad, too, but there is no way to anticipate everything that can happen.

My daughter here is miffed with Gramma because she spoils Donovan so much he started to call her Mommy.

What can I say? Gramma rocks him and sings for him and feeds him and plays with him, what can we expect.
How old is he ? Is he young enough that he cant say Gramma yet ? he may be trying to ?

So far, this one is still eating and drinking. But I am not hopeful that the tendon will stay put. :-( I had set four blue eggs (BCM X EE) and this guy was the only one to hatch...and he hatched a full day later than the rest. I really want him to make it....and I really want him to be a hen, lol.

I think I'm going to have to just hatch another round mid-Summer.

I may have some exra EE to spare at chicken stock ..I bought 10 blue hatching eggs ...if they all hatch ...I will be wanting to sell some of them .
I only want a few extra hens this year

I have to share ...I just got two new coops in place. One I bought a shed. I put a linoleum floor in it and made some nice roosts and covered the floor with straw and set the remainder of the straw in the corner. Looked in this afternoon and it just seemed sparse...there was a dead chicken on the bale. I got in to get it and noticed several chickens had fallen down between the straw bale and the wall and died.

So, I am completely beside myself. I had no idea they would get stuck down there much less die. I lost many of my bielfelders and sulmtalers. I learned where not to store my straw bales. I hope none of you ever experience this... it sucks and could have totally been avoided.

So sad ...Im sorry ....
I have a thought ..because it was more than 1 chicken ..one chicken could have a accident. and get stuck ..
How long ago did you put in the Linoleum floor ? was it new ? Did you use any kind of Glue to keep it down ? or Cleaner ?
How soon after you put it down ...did you put the chickens in it ?
I would probably take them all out ..I suspect it may be related to that .
A terrible Accident ..for sure

Odd that so many died down there. Silly chickens. Sorry for your loss. I did have one banty roo go missing last fall, assumed a hawk got him. Found him this winter when feeding out the horse hay, had fallen quite far down between the wall studs and hay bales.

It's good to share so others learn, though I am sorry for your loss. I too learned the hard way.

My broody pool is in a back room with concrete blocks with the holes up. I found a nice C. Rock one morning head first in one of the holes. I've taken to filling them with spray in foam.

I lost two dels hens to that aluminum covered foam board I used in the coop to insulate. They got just high enough to peck at it and I think that is what killed them.

I too have learned to make sure there is no where they can "jam" themselves into. Chickens panic and try to bury their heads.

Again I am sorry for your loss.

Thanks for your reply...I just put them in their new shed friday evening... i put the feeder and waterer on the hay bale and another on the floor...It reminded me of the indian buffalo drives. They got stuck in the framing of the 2x4 and the bale. They are about 3 months old now and the bale is about 24" high. My boyfriend had been doing the feeding and watering of them because I have been ill all weekend.

The kids spent the day painting the shed coop and the door was open all day. Said they didn't hear anything out of the norm. I am completely disgusted with myself. I looked at the bale when I placed it...A couple chicks had jumped down there and then back up...so, I figured...no issue.

The floor is not glued down. We like to pull it out of the coops and wash it down.
