Folks, any suggestions on how to keep my flock from eating our house?

The house is built on a concrete slab (part of it is, anyways), and there is a good foot or so above ground that is covered in this insulating foam stuff. For some bird-brained reason, the hens, and the rooster, have been eating it! They've actually done considerable damage!

My husband is furious and wants me to stop letting them free-range. But the pen is really not large enough to support the number of birds we have, and anyways...I like them to free-range because they dig up around the fruit trees and stuff.

Any suggestions aside from putting up a barrier?

If you can use these you can have them. I've got things on floppies I can't access because I haven't a drive. One particular a report I did on the effects of BTEX in our drinking water.

Well considering your moniker, you do realize a 12 pack of Coors does not constitute a "dish" right?    

How about a couple five gallon kegs of my homebrew? A strong dark stout or mild wheat beer, or maybe hard cider on tap? Lol

Not really. For some reason they like it. Mine ate a whole panel of foam insulation I left out. No idea why it appeals to them but you're probably going to have to put up a barrier. Some hardware cloth over it would keep them from being able to eat it.

Mine did that too, but then I moved and did not have to deal with it anymore, so I'm not sure what to do but your not the first

You can't be serious? How do you expect to keep them from eating it without putting up a barrier? Of course you have to put up a barrier. Eventually it will kill your birds.

I have some inside my coop. The aluminum covered and thought they'd be fine. I did have most of it covered with plywood but there was a bit they managed to get to just above the roost. Well two of the hens died and I have no doubt it was the foam insulation. I stapled some cardboard over it and lowered my roost.

When we had the new garage door installed I paid extra to have the inside covered with steel as well so there was no foam insulation exposed.

I have no idea why they're attracted to it.
