NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all! Well my baby girl got engaged yesterday! Very happy for her and her man. He takes good care of her and treats her like a princess so I'm good with that. The wedding won't be for a couple of years yet as she is finishing pharmacy school. That was my only caveat to this.

Set off some fireworks last night. Sparklers mostly. Didn't know the last one had bangers in it. Well, they went off and you should have heard the terrorist coop! Duke and the girls went crazy, bawking up a storm! It was funny, to us not them. They probably thought it was open season on them! We will see how it affects their laying today! Lol let the monsters out this am to freerange. Had to call them back from the road. They were too close for my comfort. Putting a sign up tomorrow at the feed store for the roosters. Who knows, maybe somebody will buy one or more. If not, I'll eat them. Got a boot on my silkie with the curled toes. Seems a vitamin defence can cause it in older chicks. Adding c it b to their water. May switch to poultry cell. The chick is doing fine otherwise. I'm sure having its toes wrapped into proper placement is painful. Cleaning out the big coop today. I ordered nesting pads as the girls keep throwing everything out of the boxes. At least they won't be able to throw these out! They are washable so cleanup will be easy.

Rainbow...ditto to the above. Chickens do fine as long as there is plenty of ventilation and no drafts in the coop. My coops are pretty open. Haven't lost a chicken yet. They also have their pop door open every day and choose to go out every day unless it's really windy on very cold days (negative temps).

Congratulations!

This being my first year as a flock keeper I have a question. Hubby mowed yesterday and after all the rain it was a mess. We have mulching blades on the mower so everything is good and short, would it be ok to toss it in the run to cover some of the mud?

Hey folks. New chicken person here, got four for eggs and pest control. I'm in Oswego county. Today will be day three of chickens, and we've already gotten two eggs. They're even starting to go in the coop without wrangling! We converted an old shed into a makeshift chicken coop, learning as we go. You guys have some impressive coops going on! Are they NY winterproof?
Welcome Rainbow,

Winter proof depends on differing opinions. Here's one of mine, nothing but a couple of tarps over the top. In a sheltered are, but this second pic is not. snow provides quite a bit of insulation. No frozen chickens yet. Three chickens might need a bit more protection as they won't provide as much heat as 6 or 7.

(I just like to post pics)

I snow blow a path and the door is open all day. They go in and out as they wish. This coop had marans in it and they laid great during the winter. I feed a higher protein feed as a rule.

Now don't forget to look up the Chickenstock on Sept 12 th.

Yes that is fine as long as you don't have any chemicals on your grass. I rake up our yard and toss it into the coop all the time. Especially for the ones that aren't free ranging with the others. Thye chickens will scratch around it looking for any goodies that may be in there. I would make sure that you put a lot on the mud as the chickens will scatter it around and there might not be an more grass on the mud spot when they are done.

Our yard is 100% chemical free . We only use aged manure as fertilizer and chickens as pest control. I have edibles growing all one the property for my family so we avoid chemicals like the plague. Oh and our manure is from the farm we work at so I know that's safe as well.

I use a bagger on my mower but still have the shoot open. Otherwise it gets clogged to easily since it's wet here. I dump some in the run, chicken yard or compost pile. A bagger is great in the fall as it gets all the leaves.

Pretty much anything that is safe can be dumped in the chicken run. I dump insoluble grit in there as well so they have to scratch. Plus scratch of course.

If it gets too wet I break open a bale of hay or wood shavings. They're scratching keeps thing aerated. I don't clean the runs very often except to take a couple of wheelbarrows out to dump on the compost. Which of course is what the chickens are walking on in the run. Just pile it on.
